Hi all. Playing with my 190xt again. It is now running well. The tach does not work and I can't find anything in my books on how it works/drives. I am guessing it would drive off of the distributor base. Is there supposed to be a cable for it? The tractor is showing 3957 hours. Which obviously, are not current. It is not important. I just like to have things working. Maybe the head unit is junk. I don't know that yet. I am sure some could be electrical. I would guess this tractor is old enough to not have that. I am not doing a restoration on this tractor. I am a patina guy. The tractor looks great to me. When I figure out how to post a picture of it. I will. Thanks  Pat

Tach is not electric. Cable driven off the engine. Diesel engine has a drive on the left side. Not sure where it is on the gas engine, but without a cable, your tach will not work.

Cable might also be broken inside - mine was. Replaced the cable and everything worked again.

It drives off the cam / oil pump - mid block - the gas has a 90 degree plug on the distributor base that contains the tach drive mechanic and male threads for the cable. 74054851 IS THE PLUG     parts.agco

Most likely broken cable, easy to check. Unscrew it from the tach, start the tractor and see if it’s turning. Star Speedometer in FL will make a new cable or repair the tach. Not cheap, but he guarantees them for a year. He has repaired 4 for me and they look new when I get them back. I highly recommend him.

How did you find that number? I went on the sight and it doesn't recognize that number. It doesn't recognize the tractors serial number 190 5960 either. Maybe I am doing it wrong Ouch

Star Speedometer is great, but I heard he recently retired

He is still repairing, he just restored my D14 tach. Called him last week to get him to make me a new cable. Arrived today and I called him to let him know I received it. We talked for a while, he is doing well and didn’t mention retiring anytime soon although he told me last year he was thinking about it. He still enjoys repairing our old stuff. Thank goodness he does.

When I bought a 190 it didnt have a cable in it. Picked up a university speedometer cable at auto parts store. Just cut to lenght and swag the end on. Comes with a cheesy wack it with a hammer toll to put the end on was only a few bucks.

Don't search my serial number, search by the model (190).  You have not said if your tractor is a gas or diesel, but here is a picture of the tach drive and cable on a 1967 diesel - just left of the oil filter.

I just want to confirm that the Tach should drive off the distributor for the 190xt gas model, and not the alternator?

That's how it looks to me but the books seem to indicate different
