does your tractor have an old generator... or a newer alternator ?

It's under the black part of the hood for the steering column. Had trouble with mine some years back. I'll see if I can find a link to that thread.
Found it, may not be a big help though. https://www.allischalmers.com/forum/185-voltage-regulator_topic179427_post1521089.html?KW=alternator#1521089" rel="nofollow - https://www.allischalmers.com/forum/185-voltage-regulator_topic179427_post1521089.html?KW=alternator#1521089

If some body put the new type alternator on you don't need the regulator

should look like one of these... a generator uses the voltage regulator... and OLD ALTERNATOR can have a regulator also.. NEW alternators do not need a regulator, it is internal..... How was the tractor charging the battery before without the reg ?

Not sure if that’s old style or new always charged fine before changing harness

that looks like a Delco with a tack drive ?? If it charged before WITHOUT the regulator, then i would assume it has an INTERNAL regualtor... You can look at the TWO PIN CONNECTOR and see if they are parallel to each other or IN LINE with each other.. But since it WAS WORKING.. i think you dont need the regulator wires, but need to make sure the TWO PIN CONNECTOR is part of the NEW HARNESS.
check the two wires on the small plug on the alternator... something was rewired at that point for the alternator... you need that on your new harness.

185s never had generators. All were alternator with voltage regulator from the factory. If it was charging before the wiring harness was changed, then one of the wires are not going where it is supposed to. When I bought my 190XT, one of the wires intended for the alternator was actually hooked up to the water temperature sensor! No wonder it didn't charge!

he says it was charging with the old harness, and it was not connected to a voltage regulator ?? thats the confusing part... ( your right about the generator.. my bad.)... possibly a NEW alternator has been installed with INTERNAL regulator ? and need to know if it is a 1 wire or 3 wire... does the OLD harness and NEW harness have the same alternator small wire plug ?
im thinking there might be an EXTRA wire added to the OLD harness ( if they eliminated the voltage regulator) that will be neede in the NEW harness ?? .. if its a 3 wire....but the PAINT makes it look like original..

My 180 has an alternator and has an external voltage regulator under the sloped hood behind the instrument panel. My 185 has no external voltage regulator.

ALL 180/185 had the same wiring as to alternators. When the key is turned on one can hear a clunk and the right terminal gets 12V - the left terminal delcotron plug of the two is 12V. IF it was charging and the harness was not plugged into the alternator - We think that is what you meant - it means the alternator was a 'one wire' or a self exciting internal regulator - it has to be revv'd up to around 1500 rpm to 'kick in'. As stated above the regulator is under the black cowl and mounted to the hood with a rubber isolator pad - it has to be grounded. The factory harness plugs into the regulator with a plastic regulator plug.

Haymaker 6060, your picture is a Delco 10DN alternator with mechanical tach drive they normally use external regulator. Originally the Voltage Reg was under the small cover in front of instruments & on hood. There are 2 regulators available for that harness; with ammeter or with idiot light. They do not interchange, wrong regulator and won't charge. IF memory is correct the Delco 10DN can be converted to 1 wire with an aftermarket regulator that plugs into the 2 wire plug on alternator & 1 or 2 other wires. IF yours was charging without the flat plug for regulator in use, it may have 1 of these mounted someplace.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I’m very new with wiring so I changed the harness wire for wire with the old one. I’ve looked this thing over a hundred times for a regulator. Having the hood off I happened to go look at the hood and there it is mounted to the hood. I would assume it’s still in working order seeings how it was charging fine but connections look rusted I’ll clean and attach it up. Thanks again for the help hope some of you got a laugh!

thank you for coming back with a summary.. Yes, we were confused with the "no regulator" part.... makes sense now.
