I've recently inherited a wd that used to run. Prolly bin 10 years or so. Got it turning over well and the carb cleaned. Still couldn't get it to run. Today I did a compression test. No compression on the middle two cylinders. So I pulled the valve cover and the exhaust valves are stuck open. Any old school tricks to loosen them without pulling the head.

Lots of penetrating oil from the top side. Get about 10 ft of nylon rope small enough in diameter to shove down inside the spark plug hole (5/16" ?) while the piston is at BDC. Have a knot tied in the rope so you don't lose it. Turn engine over by hand with all that rope coiled up inside. Rinse and repeat for the second cylinder.

KROIL will help free them up. KREEN is even better than KROIL for stuck rings and valves.
KREEN is made by KANO Laboratories, Nashville, Tn.

besides the penetrant, tapping on the end of the valve can help SHOCK it.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

take the rocker shaft off and start tapping on the valves with a plastic or rubber hammer besides you will need to make sure allof them move smooth.     and you will need to replace the push rods that got bent when you got it to roll over

Alittle update. The rope trick worked perfectly! We soaked them down really well. uploads/9354/20250210_180357.jpg" rel="nofollow - 20250210_180357.jpg uploads/9354/20250210_180909.jpg" rel="nofollow - 20250210_180909.jpg

Nice! Smile
I used the rope trick last summer on my Model C to hold the valve up when I replaced a broken valve spring.

Sweet have heard of the rope trick for replacing valve springs retainers etc but never thought of it for pushing up on stuck valves. My normal go-to is either vice grips or a couple of pry bars on the retainer,

Another update... got everything reassembled and did a compression test done. Number 3 cylinder still has no compression.   Any more tips or tricks before I pull the head. Gona barrow a buddy's bore scope tommorow and see if I can see anything.

Probably one of those valves on #3 is still not seating properly.  Tap on the valve and use more penetrating oil and it may loosen up and seat.  It may also have a burnt valve and then the head will have to come off.

.

Could be a bit of gunk/rust stuck on the valve.

If the valves on that bad cylinder are moving up and down AND have proper valve ( I'd set them loose at .030" to start) lash, get it running on the three good cylinders and run it a while and see if it comes out of it. This will cost you nothing to try.

100% agree, set the valves loose (or leave adjustment where it is if already on the loose side) and run it a while see if she comes back around.

The reason for setting/leaving the valves loose is because if there's gunk under the valve the clearance will come back smaller as it wears away.  As the Doctor said, costs nothing to try. Compression went up noticeably on my B after getting it running for a few minutes (previously it had some compression on 2 cylinders & very very little (couldn't feel it on hand cranking) on the other two.

At the very least, it'll get your motivation up hearing her run & give you a chance to verify oil pressure even if you do end up tearing back into it.

And if you run it for 30 minutes or more at a throttled up/wide open speed, you'll be able to determine if it smokes BLUE or not, indicating it needs an overhaul, including pistons and sleeves.
