I’ve had both a 22 mag and a 17 HMR.
17 is very accurate but even a slight breeze it will drift.
I had a couple varmints get away after being shot with a 17. I don’t believe they would have got away from the 22 mag.
I sold the 17 HMR and kept the 22 mag for these reasons. Both were Marlins.

22 will do a real good job to about 100 yards. The lighter, higher speed 17 will reach out much further with better accuracy. If your shooting 150 yard i would use the 17.. If your under 100 yards, the 22 wins.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

.223 or 5.56. Reaches out past 150 yds. Ammo can be relatively cheap if one shops around.

Shoot .223 out of my 5.56 barreled rifles, less noise as less aggressive and can get expanding type bullets easier.

Best varmint rifle I have, .243, mild recoil while dead accurate to 300yds.

Why do you want a 17 or the 22 mag?  Can't use it for anything but varmints or target shooting.
I agree with Dave, by far the best is the .243.  GREAT on varmints and targets and can be used on deer here in WI.
AND..........you can reload it!!!  You can't reload the 17 or the 22

I had a 17 Hornady Mag for a few months, my dad has always had a 22 mag and loves it.  Both have their place but I found for what I used the 17 for I could shoot my .223 cheaper with off the shelf or handloaded ammunition with better accuracy in windy conditions and at longer ranges.

Fun little rifle, but the 17 and 22 mag are overkill for squirrel hunting where my 22 long shines.

Was just watching a video on .22 , .22 mag , .17 and the shooter was using a 6 x 6 block with a plywood backing spaced few inches behind block .
Penetration's of the .17 surprised me of how much a .17 did to the block .
Then shooting steel plate the .17 put a small hole through plate where .22 just dented .

Call me old fashioned but I still like the end results you get with a .220 Swift. Things on the inside transmogrify to the outside pretty quick.

I'm not going to judge a caliber or a gauge. My own personal preference is if the target is 50 yards or less 12 gauge shotgun. Past 50 yards depending on the size of the critter. 223/5.56 or 30/06. The State of Michigan has set laws in place that I can use a rifle in my location to hunt deer. So I use a 450 Bushmaster to hunt deer,a great 200 yard rifle for me.

The destruction a Swift is capable of continues to amaze me after 50 years of owning it.

I've got one of my favorites, a .243 Win.  Does a great job out to 300 and I reload so it's not too expensive.

I've got something that I need to start a new thread on so youse guys can send to your senators too.  This is scary BS....
