Received a notice from one of our vendors today warning about potential disruptions due to the eclipse next week. Never thought of this being an issue, but different areas are planning for HUGE numbers of people converging into those areas to see it.
We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to
inform you of a potential disruption that may affect the timely delivery of
your packages to our labs early next week. As you may be aware, there is a
solar eclipse scheduled for Monday, 08 April 2024, and while this celestial
event promises awe-inspiring views, it also poses logistical challenges as XXXXXX is in the path of totality. We have been advised by local and state
authorities to expect widespread road closures and general difficulty with travel
in our local area on Monday due to the extremely high influx of visitors hoping
to see the event.
If you
anticipate having samples sent to us, please plan to have them delivered by
Friday, 05 April, or we ask that you please hold and ship on Tuesday, 09 April,
to ensure your samples are not delayed in transit and arrive intact.

Texas DPS has published a list of counties where all ‘permitted loads’ are suspended for the day. Wifey and I are probably going head over to Lampasses for the day, and check out all the craziness. Don’t really care about the eclipse itself, as it’s not the first one, won’t be the last. Just want to view humankind being a couple bubbles off level.

Here are talking of Secondary highways around Fredericktown to the Bootheel being impassable in places, hotels are full up all around Cap Girardeau even as inclement weather forecast. Some that usually provide rooms at $85-$150/night are now well over $600 IF can locate one.
Interstate 55 is predicted to be a royal mess as is I-57 in IL in southern end of state. Wife and I will be leaving EARLY to head to my brother's in Jackson MO, he just remarried and has been in this house less than 3 years, time for a visit anyway.

When the eclipse happened in Southern Illinois in 2017 traffic was a bit busy. I've lived on my road my whole life, minus 5 years after I moved out and bought a house in town, and I have never seen traffic like that out our way. I live about 15 miles from Carbondale where this eclipse crossed path with the one from 2017 and alot of people are all about standing in the same place to watch two eclipses.

My son is flying home from China, just for this event. Totality right over our house, and it looks like we might not have too much cloud cover. Expecting upwards of 140,000 people possible in our normal town of 30,000. Businesses and schools will be closed.
It’s a big deal, though.

Just east of us about an hour so, it’s the same story. Totality, not sure on the schools, but all hotels, campgrounds, rv parks are booked solid. We will probably head over to our rv that we have at an rv campground a couple miles outside of Lampasses Tx, for a long weekend. The eclipse itself I don’t care two shakes about, it ain’t the first won’t be the last. I just wanna see how ‘off level’ people get on something they have zero control over.

Yes, Brian- I DID sell off my solar system, but I downloaded a new one, along with the latest version of Pluto, over the internet.
Jay- if the sun doesn't come back, we've got about 37 hours before the entire earth's surface temperature falls below 32F, and within another 40 hours, the equator will reach -40F... In between those times, Most every place will be subjected to straight-line winds in excess of 200mph as differential temperatures cause incredible convection... and the end result will be very, very unavoidable...

We are in Syracuse for granddaughter's volleyball tournament.
The hotel (Marriott) we are staying in is completely full through the weekend for the eclipse. We were told that there is only one hotel in the Syracuse are that has rooms and they are $900 night.
We will be going home today and watching it from our backyard.

The economy is terrible isn't it when people can travel and spend $900 a night just to watch a natural phenomenon? They will see the same thing watching the evening news.

Hey Hubert!! Want to come to my house and watch the eclipse? We can turn our vehicles sideways and block Henderson Mountain and give the south east corner of Pickens county a new definition of idiocy
We don't need to do that. There's enough idiocy here to last 3 lifetimes

My little must make or take any excuse to not visit my family Wife and I had planned to go visit my Brother at Jackson MO today, she knew had been FOREVER since been to Cape Girardeau area. Decided over three weeks ago, regardless of weather regardless of anything just time to make a visit see his new to him home, his recent purchase 1972 Pontiac Gr Prix and his kids our nieces and nephews.
So Friday I reinforce that visit with no response but Saturday evening I am told that she already cancelled her day off, did so on THURSDAY, will be Far Too Cloudy. I throw a Fit, refuse to be around her much at all remainder of weekend, as to that Always Find a Excuse, texted my brother would not be down and why. This morning, I hear a softly issued 'I screwed up' from her, 'should have gone' from her, 'should have kept the day off' from her, and twice since my tirade she asked if could contact my brother to say we would still be down she would ask her boss off for the day by email, which BTW is how she cancelled said day off on SATURDAY as she finally admitted this morning. Just told her NO both times. Is regretting her game yet again where I am allowing her to sit and wallow in it.

Wifey and I decided to stay home also. She was getting a uncomfortable, nagging sense to just stay close to home today, which is fine with me, forecast is cloudy for our region anyway, have plenty of chores around home to do anyway.

We were in the zone of totality for the eclipse however it was overcast so could not observe it. It did get crazy dark and the birds became quiet. And at the darkest moment, if you listened closely, you could here Charlton Heston say" pharaoh, let my people go!"

My place was directly inthe path of totality and within a few miles of where a total eclipse crossed paths in August of 2017. It was a big deal for our area in 2017 and 2024, I wouldn't have though it but alot of people traveled long distances to be here to see it twice, some determined to stand in the exact same spot they were standing in 2017. My wife and I watched it from our backyard each time. My county has a population of roughly 55-60,000 people and there were easily 100,000 visitors into this county the past 4 days. Spread that across the other counties of Southern Illinois and yes, it was a big deal for this region, and outside of Jackson County, IL it was equally as busy and visited.
Alot of people spent money here with local owned places, alot of local people (including me) were glad they came and enjoyed, spent, and had memories. I thanked them all as I met them, invited them back to enjoy when it is less occupied, and gave all the good intel I could on eateries, trailheads and directions.
I didn't venture off the farm until it was over and traffic on my normally not so buy neck of the woods had died down. When my son and I jumped on the side by side and went on patrol I noticed there wasn't any more trash than before the visitors were here and it was quiet again. It really was an enjoyable time, my aunt and uncle across the farm had a nice family get together and the out of town kids enjoyed the farm for a day or two.
