A 16 yr. old employee of a grain elevator in Clinton, MO was rescued from a corn bin after being trapped in corn up to his chest. Don't ask why a 16 yr. old employee was in that situation. The rescuers were able to employ a device called "Great Wall of Rescue" which placed around the victim while they dig him out. Fortunately, he was not alone & help was called. Same old story of grain bridged with an open pocket below and human intervention is needed. In spite of education, it still happens. Penalty from OHSA to follow.

curious am I ... how does anyone get in the bin and waste high in grain? I'm thought bin would be full ? Or is there some kind of access at the bottom with a roof overtop, inside ?

This is not your usual farm grain bin, we're talking hundreds of thousands of bushels. They were taking corn out via an auger intake in the middle of the bin floor. Access is from the top. Basically, the corn bridged over the removal auger. Corn probably had some wet spots and spoilage which stopped it from flowing. Entire humans to assist. The kid should have had a harness & rope to someone on top, don't know if he did but doubtful. There is a real effort to have fire departments equipped with proper equipment in rural areas where this risk is present. Farmers with on-site storage also face this situation and there are ongoing efforts to educate & equip for just this type of rescue.

Confined Space Entry - the rule that is ignored , 2nd person , harness , extraction device , restraints , and even air quality check .
Seen that rescue device demonstrated for emergency workers , and slick , yet time takes the toll as in many cases it's just one person on site and it will only take a minute to get the system working as just bridged and can collapse it without danger .

These people got lucky simple as that. Lived the Confined Space rescue life at the plant. Trained on it annually and just prior to refuels. With all the noted and notable grain bin accident deaths why even try to chance fate as is repeated over and over again?
Can get away with something stupid once maybe twice, that one instance turn a blind eye with ‘have always done it this way’ where fate holds your hand into irreversible damage or loss.
