While there are no laws that specifically prohibit passengers from riding in the cargo area, the Illinois Vehicle Code requires that all passengers wear seatbelts, which means the answer is: no, you can’t. In Ontario, only have to wear belts IF OEM put them there. Wah thinking of Navy Days when on base they had the cattle cars , semi trailer with bench seats in it and used for transport from fleet landing to places on base . Still pretty common practice around here. Hay rack rides, parade floats, field to field, homecoming shuttles, etc. all still practiced routinely.

| Any vehicle NOT originally equipped with seat belts but has seating CANNOT be Forced to install them. Cannot impose laws imposing modifications to pre law mechanisms. US Mil Vehicles STILL have Prison Bench style Cattle Car picket Seating, troops Still carried NO belts. |

| Too lazy and really don’t care enough to look, but I know as of ……a while ………ago, it was still legal to ride in the back of a pickup in Michigan. I think it was over 16 years old, like no interstates, maybe 45 mph? I remember as kids, our whole little league team would go 10-15 miles to a game in a couple of pickups! |

Yes, this is true, Clay- and it is an interesting story in and of itself- The Subaru BRAT was sold with those seats installed for a very specific reason- At that time, there was a US trade prohibition on pickup trucks being brought INTO the USA... in order for a foriegn vehicle to be imported, it HAD to be a PASSENGER vehicle, not a pickup. Henceforth, Subaru took their little station-wagon based pickup, and made two plastic seats with seat belts... now it's a 4-seat passenger vehicle. ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest. |

I always laugh about this trip. My brother had a 1970 Ford truck when he was 16 years old. We took a road trip in that truck from Colorado to Arkansas. A17 year old a 16,a14, a12, and me at 8 years old. We three young’ens took turns riding in the back. We got stopped for speeding somewhere in KS. Ole patrols just shook his head and said slow that rig down. We hit rain a time or two and all crammed up front. That was near 50 years ago. |

Yeah Thad,,,,them was to Good Ole Days when we was full of vim and vinegar and thought we were gonna live forever and the world was never gonna end,,,,Every one remembers carrying your rifles on them back window racks for all to ogle and see,,,,Chit,,,if there was an open slot we even would hang them Daisy Red Riders on there for good measure,,,,  I used to hate election times cause them dudes would show up at the house with a pickup load of whooping and hollaring men standing in the bed of an old trk with sideboards being carried to the voting booths by way of the local bar just down the street,,,,,I hated them AH's cause my dad being an alcoholic,,,if he took one drink he'd be lost to us for at least a week,,,,,

Detassling corn in the late 70s, early 80s this is how we were hauled to the field. Tailgate down 10 or 12 of us sitting on sides and 3 or 4 on the Tailgate. 60 mph down country roads. Used to have scores of kids detasseling corn in those fields west of Rt. 4 across from White Oaks mall and southward of Wabash before all that commercial buildup took place there now. From there all the way to Koke Mill Road was fields with nothing except Leath Furniture out that way prior to 1983 and into 1984. Literally hundreds of kids transported by farm truck, pickup truck, hay wagons behind tractors, and parents etc. to get there. ------------- That's All Folks! |

| I believe it's now illegal in about every state, but if your state does allow it, check with the local towns and cities, they may have rules on it there. sure was handy for parents and farmers to let the kids/grown-ups ride in the back when there wasn't room in the cab for them. bean walkers/haying help/misc helpers...that's why they is made and called pickups...made to haul things and/or peoples/animals! |
