At least it is the right color. Owner is a customer of mine that I have been working for this week. Claims it has a 8 foot 6 inch bed . Same as a camper special. It has an original Longhorn name plate towards the back of the bed .Never seen one before. He claims chevy made 3000 of them .

I second Codger, he IS correct.

GM made extended wheelbase chassis, particularly in the 30-series (one ton) for camper use... usually they were single rear, not dually.  They didn't always use the 'camper special' moniker, but if they had a low-order year, would fit a factory-stretched pickup bed like this Longhorn... and then send them out to dealers to offer as 'specials'.

I happen to have a 1974 1-ton with long wheelbase AND an 11.5' STEPSIDE bed, and like Pat's buddy's Longhorn, there were only 3412 of this spec made.  In case of mine, I believe that most of the unordered long chassis trucks may have been offered out as cab-and-chassis, but mine clearly not, as it has a really unique, but positively factory step-side bed.

There's a whole lotta 'cool' factor in these things.

Friend of Mine has the FORD Version F250 "CAMPER SPECIAL" to which the Dealer Parts men could NOT EVER locate that series in the parts books, by S/N was a limited run by Ford to test a market and did not fly.  Only built IIRC in 73/74 to counter the GM Builds.

His father bought the truck New, he still has the truck today but essentially placed into storage as was getting so hard to get repair parts.  Special Springs, axles, brakes by size etc.  Bed was 9' and a few inches INTERNAL dimension, the rear axle is far enough back it required a three piece drive line and had the spare inside a Side door on the bedside.

Did a Little digging, Found Both GM and Ford mentioned here.  GM started in '68 and continued thru 71/72, Ford added theirs in '73.

Just checked my '69 C 10 and it's 8' 2" long . I knew a 4' by 8' sheet of plywood would fit with the tailgate up . Thanks

I had a 72 3500 with the 8' 6" box. I always bought the camper special for the camper wiring harness. Put a plug on the end for pulling gooseneck trailers. Powered by a 400 big block with a 4 speed, tach and gauges but otherwise a plain work truck. Also had a 71 with the same spec. Later there were at least 4 454 powered trailer pullers .
