I had never seen before, outlet in our house that the outlet tester was showing ‘open ground’. Cut the power at the breaker, pulled the outlet out, and low and behold somebody ran a bare wire from the green ground lug, to around the back of the outlet and pushed the other end of the wire into the ‘quick connect’ on the neutral.
This box appears to have the older style ‘14/1’ romex. On my next trip to the hardware store I will get a 2-prong outlet and switch it out.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Lars, father in law had an old barn that was wired with 12-2 wire ( no ground) and had 2 prong plugs in it. He was constantly cutting the Ground Lug off of tools and extension cords to use them in the old sockets. When sockets would fail he would install a new 3 prong socket and  leave the ground OPEN so the extension cords could be used without cutting...... That works, but didnt solve a potential problem...

I didnt want to stretch a ground wire all around the place, so i ended up getting 4 GFI plugss and mounted them to the wall below the breaker box... I pulled out the 4  - two wire cables that feed the N- S- E- W walls and installed the on the OUTLETS of the 4 GFI... I then put 4 NEW 12-2 with ground wires from the 4 GFI to the 4 breakers inside the breaker box.. Now you have a GROUND to the GFI and it will protect everything down stream on the NO GROUND  system.. I had stickers on each receptical that had 3 prong sockets and said " no ground wire"... but they WILL TRIP of something happens.. Just no ground wire.................... I thought that was a good compromise compared to not having an original ground.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Thanks Steve, I think a previous owner kinda did as your graphic shows. Could only find two outlets on this breaker, one is at the kitchen sink, and is a GFCI outlet, the other one, on the opposite side of the wall(which at one time was an outside wall) is a standard outlet, which the one that had the ground wired into the neutral.
