A few years ago, it or one identical to it was at Union Station in KC. it was open to the public to walk thru. I think they are based & maintained in Cheyenne. Nice to have a big PR budget to support them. I made the mistake of asking young engineer (maybe 30) if it actually operated the entire distance on its own power? What a stupid question, I was informed that yes, they did operate the entire route under their own power. There is a considerable support team with it, whether by vehicle or a support train. |

| U.P. ordered 20 of them "big boys" way back, they are the largest in the world. I'm think'in that 4014 is the only one left to run the rails, there are several on display in various parts of the country. look up the story on the "big boy", it's interesting reading! |

If any of you get up close to the Big Boy, ask for Austin Barker, he is the one in the window in the picture D19 posted. He's kinda family and has been a major force in seeing her get towed from the Los Angles County Fair Grounds back to the steam shop in Cheyenne then helped totally dismantle her down to the rivets and build her back up to what she is today. Austin's a good guy, even if he does own a half dozen or so John Deeres. I guess he likes to have things to work on instead of drive! He also is one of the operators of the family Case steam tractors at our show. By the way, she burns used crankcase oil from the diesel locomotives. The diesel unit behind the fuel and water tank cars is there because the UP requires it to be, mainly for extra braking and electric power generation. There is a pretty much complete machine shop in one of the cars that can build most anything that will break on the train.
