A customer of mine has a mil surplus 60 kw gen-set. w/ a model 3500 engine (built 2/85). He exercises it monthly for about ten minutes each month. Last week while in the exercise mode (1/2 throttle), he said that it gave a belch of black smoke, and began to (without any action from him) increase engine speed and black sooty oil mix came from exhaust stack. He shut down the fuel solenoid and the engine began to gradually decrease speed and finally stopped.. Then he called me..

I believe that this run-a-way may have been caused by a blown oil seal in the turbo that fed a oil/diesel mixture into the combustion chambers and when he stopped the flow of diesel, it would not run on lube oil alone and thus stopped..

Any experience with this phenomenon, and if so, am I on the right track?? Any replies appreciated... Bobby

I think you you have it right. I've never personally experienced this but know a guy that had it happen in a MACK truck. Usually you don't get the engine stopped before it is too late. Thats why the old two stroke Detroits had the emergancy shut down that blocked the air intake.
