Mine has a very small cable hooked to the battery box.
I’d like to make this right.
It never turned over very good.

this observation has nothing to do with a G.  I've always found grounding back to the engine block with the correct sized ground cable or bigger, helps starters work up to factory standards!

Thad, it mounts to the front box mounting bolt, a good #1 or a heavy braided cable is needed. A good clean connection to the mount and to the shifter plate is also needed. I usually add another cable from the back side of the bracket to the starter mounting bolt just to guarantee a good ground.
