Since my ISP company had 'funny' email problems, I've been using Gmail email addresses,

I have my Gmail emails 'linked' to Mozilla Thunderbird as it's a LOT easier for me to navigate...
this has worked fine until.... Sunday night.

then I 'lost' all my emails....
So I've spent 2 days learning what went 'wrong'.

It turns out that Gmail has an 'option' to either keep ALL your emails OR if you hit 1,000 within a month it DELETES them, AUTOMATICALLY !!

I must have hit 1001 on Sunday......poof, back to a clean slate........

Not the need of the world, just a pain in the azz. I can get the emails  off this HD ,if I really, really want to..as they are buried.
I've since updated my Gmail options, so it shouldn't happen again....Only have 22 emails, so it'll be awhile before 1001 comes.

BTW , Thunderbird did NOT screw up...it was 'in sync' with Gmail. It was Gmail that trashed my emails.

I have had Yahoo for 25 - 30 years and no charge. I got a email about 2 weeks ago and went checking . What I found , I think it was a scammer trying to screw me.

I've never had an issue with gmail.  I used to have hotmail a while back, that was ok, but at the time I didn't use it much, and they delete you if you don't use it for a while.  That may have changed since then, that was a very long time ago.  I've never paid for an email service.

Hey Steve, I mainly use Outlook (Microsoft) and "Some" satisfied altho am prolly gonna look elsewhere as they have recently started to post ads taking the right 1/4 of page and you have to expand the page in order to read your messages! I have complained to MS but so far falls on deaf ears over there.  i also have Gmail account, PLUS one from my ISP ,,,and could prolly use another one,,,,

I've had a Yahoo account for years. I have no reason to change.

Since I still work part-time, I have a (mandated) Microsoft Outlook account solely for work.

I have been using OUTLOOK on the computer, but it goes to FRONTIER to get the mail.. My account  was with Frontier.. We cancelled the land line and were using just their internet service over the phone line.. That got to be a pain as they added people and still had the old phone line as service.. We switched to ATT satelite service 5 years ago and dropped the Frontier service, but kept the e-mail for the last 30 years.  Recently they have decided they dont want to support my e-mail if i dont have service with them.

I setup a gmail account... and am in the process of contacting various companies that we pay monthly bills to , of the change. .....

Computer is 8 years old and running WIN 7.  When i last computer died several years ago i  lost a lot of e-mail history in the end using OUTLOOK ..... been wondering about that lately.... If  8 year old computer takes a crap, i hate to "setup" everything again..  Might just keep my e-mail storage at gmail site, and not on my personnel computer.

Gmail does store everything, forever on the Google computer, if setup using IMAP....neighbour has 50,000 emails. I lost my 1000 due to a 'configuration/setup' SNAFFU.

Mozilla Thunderbird 'syncs' to Gmail, and saves a 'local copy' of the emails on the PC.
When I installed Thunderbird , it 'magically' grabbed ALL my 'Outlook Express' and never lost an email or address .

yea... that works if your UPDATING your computer.. If you CRASH , its harder to get them back.... Storing at GOOGLE seems  like a long term fix..

Not sure about Gmail, but Yahoo stores all your email (and has a lot of storage capacity- I have thousands of old emails that I have never deleted) with no charge$. One of the things I like about Yahoo is that I can check my email from any computer, phone or other device that can access the internet.

re: Storing at GOOGLE seems  like a long term fix..

until you lose access to the internet and Google...
like when the ISP 'box' down the road magically dies....

be interesting to see what happens if Google, or any other 'cloud service'  went offline for 24 hours !!!

Jay... my point was if the computer craps out... You could loose a LOT of info / mail , what ever is on the computer... If its on the CLOUD, you buy a new computer or go next door to borrow, and your back on e-mail in 5 minutes.. ... Now id GOOGLE goes broke or folds, thats another story !!  Big smile

I rwemember on this site years ago that MANY members had rented space on sombody's site and that compasny sold to another and the new owners jacket their rental price way up and woild not give members access to their files ,,,or asomething like that,,,,,??

Gmail, Yahoo, etc are all easy to use and convenient, but just be aware they read your email. Or at least their bots do. Mention "I need a new truck" and watch adds start showing up for new trucks. Pretty certain I was shadow banned by Google due to comments they picked up from me from email I sent to a guy what uses gmail.

Outlook, Apple mail, thunderbird, etc, are the software programs that allow you to view email. The inboxes, outboxes, etc.

What most may not be aware of, you can get your own website domain........say "ACLover.com" and even if you never develop a website, you can have emails attached to it. Could be "steve@aclovers.com". Plug that into outlook mail or thunderbird and you are off and running.

Got to know a thing or two, or have someone who does, but is doable if you want your very own unique email. Cost is what it takes to maintain the website domain. Probably $10 per year or less.

Biggest downside is keeping spam at bay.
