Damaging rim lip removing tires?

I was removing old tires from some 1939 B front wheels. Despite my best efforts, I ended up bending the rim lip in a couple places using my tire irons removing the tires. I was suprised how malleable the metal seemed. And yes, the tires are very old and stiff.

Is this typical?

I have never bent a rim removing the tires.

I have straighten several rim lips that were damaged in use.

I have had tires that were so OLD/ HARD/ BRITTLE that they literally tore up the beads trying to pry them off the rims ....... but i never bent the rim

I've only ever bent lawn mower rims. they are soft enough to bend just bend them back. I've had some that were so hard I couldn't get them off a Sawsall makes short work of impossable tires.

My tire guy (son) dropped by. After saying the problem happened b/c no rubber lube, I lubed the tire and watched him work (he did this for a living). Guess what? He bent a lip as well even using a 3rd tire iron - said its routine on these tiny wheels with stiff sidewalls.

My conclusion: if the front tires need changed after 40+ years, cut them off or be ready to straighten the rim lips afterwards.

lube helps 100% on tires that will FLEX... all the lube in the world dont help on hard/ brittle tires.

Some tractors I have bought over the years have had dented/bent rims. It seems that some people do get overly ambitious when it comes to mounting/dismounting tires. With the swing of a sledgehammer, rims can dent pretty easily.

I take mine to my fab shop to fix. They heat it up and hammer it back into shape. Comes back as good as new.
