Friends of mine run body shops, also a few still in welding field and shop, come to find a few have been sued in recent history for Electronics Damage to cars, light and heavy trucks even heavy construction machines. If need to do ANY welding AT ANY position on the current level of electronics machinery in our lives, 'MUST' completely Disconnect Batteries and absolutely Clean off Ground location COMPLETELY. As much a Buddy of mine with a later Harley is suing a shop for electronics damages to his ride as they welded a small failure on the rear frame. CANBUS will not forgive not disconnecting the electrical on these machines. 99% of all these electronic marvels on the streets and fields have some proprietary form of CAN BUS Technology in them including tractors, implements, combines etc.

Need to place your work lead, (ground clamp) as close as possible to your weld zone too. Keep the electron path as short as possible.

Well Dave I found that out the hard way when I was welding on my newer green tractor. The old AC's were not a problem. When I got done welding the tractor would not start! Ended up having to buy a new solenoid. Wasn't hard to fix - just the idea. I have learned to remove the battery connection first. ------------- Ken R. |

| I wrote this as have so many old friends some in some not in farming that have had or done damage. Family of mine in IL welded on a newer(bought used) Red round baler, has electronic screen controller sits in cab when using, had to replace the controller as it cooked. And ex-coworker in Montgomery County MO damaged his Green Combine re-seeder by welding on a piece he did not think was of any significance. |

That's been the case since the mid 70s when the mandated and failed "121" ABS brake systems came into being. Welding and computers don't play well together, even a stray voltage spike form a vehicles own electrical system will foul things up. Like bad grounds and rust. Aren't computer controlled vehicles just the greatest, NOT. I'm glad to be old enough the all my pre computer vehicles will outlast me and I'll never need to own one. ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. The sad thing is they CAN play together IF the 'computers' are properly designed and built but to save a few pennies they aren't. I designed/built remote energy control systems 3 decades ago never EVER had a failure due to welders or Mother Nature. One system was in a huge building FULL of welders (all 3 phase of course...), no problems. Another had cables on the roof to connect 3 buildings(1,000ft more or less) . Mother Nature lit up the sky... took out the companies terminals and such, my stuff kept on working. Don't get me going on CANbus ! Greatest CONjob of the century...... Ihad to TELL the local NIssan dealership's high priced electronic techs WHERE the problem was in wife's car AFTER they'd had it 3 times ( can't find fault )....using their $$$$ diagnostic rigs. My homebuilt $20 CANbus 'tester' found it though..... ------------- 3 D-14s,A-C forklift, B-112 Kubota BX23S lil' TOOT( The Other Orange Tractor) Never burn your bridges, unless you can walk on water |

| so how do these rig welders with brand new trucks weld on the beds off thier trucks and almost always with the ground clamped to the bed my welding rigs are old but i have worked with guys with the brand new 2021 welding up parts on the back of the bed, i have always grounded as close as possible to my work and i have never had any problems . i think all tot of times somone allready had problem and needed to blame it on the welder |

| When I worked at the International dealership we had a unit that the guys clamped to the batteries across all terminals. Looked kinda like a load tester. Then welded away. Never had any issues. Some of the guys still preferred to unhook batteries. |

The Chilton Ford service manual I have for my truck says to disconnect the battery and ABS system before doing any welding. ------------- Don't confuse my personality with my attitude. My personality is who I am. My attitude depends on who you are. |
