Guessing I now qualify under said title, as a young contact I have called me several days ago, had a "Relatively Old" 2000 year model Cummins N series had a "Chirp" was diagnosed INCORRECTLY as a Bad Turbo and by a Cummins Tech.  He asked for assistance as a New Turbo failed to eliminate the noise.  Asked him of had checked Head Bolts, will have a Broken One.  He laughed and scoffed at such a premise.  Laid out how to check them, using little more than a 1/2" Steel Rod I still have in my tools assortment.  Another Scoff!!

Last EVENING he called me back, asked HOW Did I know?  Told him was $1000 question.  He was excited as found a Broken Head Bolt.  Was shown that by a late 40s something wrench at my first Civilian Job after Trade School, 1976.

Book learning gets you the overall knowledge... Experience is what solves problems.... Not every solution is in the book.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Would that be th ring test, where you whack each bolt with the 1/2" bar, and listen for those that don't make the bar ring?  Ring, ring, ring, thock, found the baddy?Wink

Not much experience on Cummins engines myself but sometimes the homemade tool is just the ticket for tasks. I have stuff I've made almost 50 years ago that still comes in handy at times.

Now to find it when needed at times.....
