Finally started a job that I’ve been dreading since I bought the ole girl. I knew the brakes were bad on the right side when I bought it this year which factored into my offer for it. So I soaked the pins from the bottom access hole Kroil about a week ago. Had my local machine shop make a puller like the ones you can buy but out of heavier steel. I couldn’t believe it but I hardly had to wrench it before being able to pull it out. Pulled the brakes and verified the damaged to the drum. It will have to be replaced on the right side. Will replace seals while I’m in there. The left side pin also seams to move easily although I didn’t finish pulling it because I need 1 one good brake to put her on my trailer to take it to my buddy’s shop so I can use his overhead hoist to remove the drop housing. Left side axle seal and pinion seal is leaking so that side has to come off as well. You're way ahead of the game just having the pins out! My success rate with the puller is probably around 30%. |

I’ve heard lots of stories about the pins being rusted in place, heads breaking off while pulling. I firmly believe the Kroil did its job, it’s been a great product for me for a long time. The right side brakes haven’t been touched for a long time as the picture shows the damage from neglect. I did take a long punch and tap the pin for about 10 hits hoping to loosen it. Not sure if that helped but they came loose easily. I have heard they are a bear to get off Steve. A few resorted to a torch after the puller failed. Hoping I won’t have to do that. My old AC dealer has a puller that he is going to let me borrow. I watched a YouTube video with a guy using a hydraulic puller. That looked sweet but no way I want to spend that kind of cash for one. | BRAKE DRUM REMOVAL: Step #1. Take a 3 or 4 pound hammer and break the drum off the center hub one piece at a time !! Be careful and watch out for flying cast iron !! Step #2. Rest what's left of the brake drums hub on a solid stand. Take a large sharp chisel and with the hammer used in step #1, split the hub right at the keyway. The hub will virtually fall off. Step #3. Place all tooling back where they belong. |

| After busting drum off, use a grinder with a cut off disc to slot hub over keywey to key, then use hammer and chisel like Dr. said. Will save a few licks with hammer. MACK |
