Well my 7020 send a rod through the block yesterday. Wondering what other machines out there have the same turbo 301 in it. I'd like to find a running engine (swap parts of from a combine) and drop it in.
Had considered putting a 426 in there and making it a 7045 but don't want to mess with the radiator since the new on is only a year old.
Any ideas or thoughts are always welcome, heck I'd consider putting a 5.9 Cummins in it if I could do it for the right price. đ

Technically, your 649-TI engine configuration (turbocharged/inter-cooled/piston cooled/ 145 rated flywheel HP) was only used in the 7020 tractor and SOME M-3/L-3 Gleaner combines. How many hrs were on your failed engine ?? What failed?? piston pin bushing or connecting rod bearing ??

Had around 12,000 hours (5500 on a inframe kit years ago) still chopping silage up here so haven't opened it up but by the looks of the holes in the block I think connecting rod bearing failure.
I figured there was something special about the engine, had to put a new head on it a couple years ago and it was a pain to find one. Maybe I'm better off finding a 426...

Replace lower end bearings ever 5000 hrs. That 5.9 is a good setup. Planetary are a little light for a 426. MACK

Hard to beat a 301 but the 5.9 would be appealing to me if I had issues finding a good 301. Plenty of 301âs built so finding one shouldnât be an issue even if you need to rebuild one.

I think the finding a 426 and making it a 7045 is a good plan if you can't find a 301 TI. It should bolt right up to the transmission without much mods and the fact that your rad is new should keep it cool. A 5.9 Cummins would likely also have the same amount of hp but would need more modification.

technically making it like a 7030/7040 since it would have 2 pinion differential still, so keep that in mind if you wanted to work it harder than originally designed for. I put my 7040 to the test 300' at a time, with over 300hp lol! Constant field use at high hp stresses things way more though.
