Picked up a parts tractor (red) that has a delco 12 volt neg ground, it has a plug conected to terminals 1 & 2, with two small wires that went somewhere in a former life.  Can I just jumper terminal 1 & 2 together and make this a one wire alt ?   If not where do wire terminal 1 & 2 get connected to ?   This alt turns free bearings seem fine and I would like to use it on future project.        Thanks in advance for the help !

#2 is hot and can be jumpered to the BIG LUG on the back that goes to the battery... #1 is the excitation and is switched on and off by the KEY or TOGGLE switch.. Normally there is a resistor or idiot light in the line to drop voltage slightly to make it KICK IN ... and you dont want FEEDBACK thru the #1 wire to the coil... could make the tractor continue to run with the SWITCH OFF.

im assuming this is the OLD STYLE LARGE 10SI alternator from the 1970-80 era... If it is a newer , smaller unit, the resistor would probably be 100 watts.

If you have an alternator that loks like this, it is a Delcotron and uses an external regulator.
The 10SI alternators have internal regs.

Thanks Steve and JC   It is the older style and does not look like the one in the picture, the spade connections are on the outer rim of the housing.  I will wire it like the print Steve shows.        THANKS        Mark
