Last two weeks, as take trash down the hill for weekly pickup On Wednesday was no issue at 5am, went to town just as Auto Parts was to open first of those two, get down the hill Mailbox been hit with a Casey's Water bottle, Seal Unbroken as was bottle still full.  Made Sheriff report, used a fist inside box straightened out dent as post is on a Drive In support and gives enough a thrown object will not take off box.
Last Wednesday Same issue Down hill early NO Damage, back with additional bag an hour later from workshop and ANOTHER Casey's water bottle, New Dent in Box, beat dent out and shoved box post back to straight.

SO then, Wednesday THIS week as have a Trend, will take Trash down, have a nice point of Hide where the Old Gap Gate into the pasture once sat, will park truck where Head Lamps will illuminate highway and have me some coffee.  Camera, Binoculars, Phone and Shotgun with me.  Figure they ARE Stupid Enough to try it ONE MORE TIME.

Happy hunting!  Personally, What we did was to armor the mailbox, got plenty of sandstone rocks around it, plus a little tank trap made out of 3 lawnmower blades, welded into a giant caltrop, of sorts!

Several neighbors have done just that, ours is self protected other than by hurled missiles as sits next to a deep ditch so cannot swerve into proximity without losing control. Was warned by USPS that a box has to be impact release capable or can be sued for damages, if along the road cannot be too armored or again open self to suit for damages if someone gets injured of impact with it.

Sad when Law Enforcement numbers are such the miscreants do this where even if are known to cops get away with it as too little time available to spend on correcting the problem and the problems simply self perpetuate.

Seems like a piece of 1/4" plate on the side of the mailbox would stop dents.

My Uncle had trouble with people destroying his mailbox. He pounded 2 steel fence posts next to the mailbox on the direction of travel and attached a piece of 3/16ths plate steel to the posts. He painted it all black to match the box. Problem solved.

If you were closer to eastern Nebraska and it was covered with grease, I suspect we would know who was responsible... LOL

I was wondering if had angered anyone, not had any altercations since lived here with anyone reasonably close, and certainly not with anyone lived down our hwy further.

Should know something by Wednesday Morning.

Ya know, years ago, I had a mailbox along a state road. every year someone would take it out with, I presume a 4x4 with a snow blade, post, box and all. Their tracks were evident in the berm, where they would swerve off the road, whack the box, and back on the road. same time every year, around the end of May. No doubt end of the school year shenanigans. Anyhow, a well driller had left a 3" well pounding stem on my property. I wanted to cut a 6-7 foot piece of it and cement it in ground for a mailbox post. I did not do it because I was advised of the lawsuit thing. I am still dubious of that claim though. If that were the case utilities would be sued every time someone takes out a pole... instead of charging the hapless motorist $1-2K for it! Hindsight, I still wish I had done it, we would have had a suspect or two! LOL  truth is, I would have had a hard time cutting and hauling that 3" piece of solid steel!

My BIL had his box destroyed four times and got angry, set a 4x4square steel pipe for a post, concreted a Standard mailbox inside a Parcel box and welded a plate on the post for support for the now forty pounds of box.  Was around two weeks, same yayhoos that had gotten it before came racing down the road as he watched, kid in back of pickup had a 2x4 and went to knock the box off as usual.  BIL heard the Crack then the Scream, kid broke BOTH hands with the board.

Well police called and showed up, kids were just down the road and the Sheriff there came to BILs house, said not illegal but post office would be notified no mail until a Correct box was installed.  Needed to be Wood Post or Gauge Metal post that would fold up on accident, and no concrete mailboxes.

Never charged just warned, kids parents were distraught AT the destructive boys but also disheartened a Football Team Member would not ever play again.  The Dad came up and paid for five destroyed mailboxes knowing his son had done them, also said if left the Concrete box would eventually sue the snot out of BIL.  Whole assembly got swapped.

Probably 10 years ago in Jefferson county a car load of kids were running around knocking off mail boxes with a baseball bat, kid in the front curbside hit one the farmer had built up out of 6 inch steel pipe because people kept bashing his box off, the bat broke, the big end came back in the open rear window and went straight through a kids neck, killed him right there, that turned into a real legal mess real fast

We had dispensation from the PO, to put up whatever we wanted, ours got hit so often!  The post is concrete filled sch 80 4" pipe, 4' in the ground, poured in about 18 bags of concrete.  The box armor is 5/16 diamond plate, salvaged from a nearby AF base dump.  The pull latch is a 2" hitch ball, in the same armor plate. After putting it in, we have had no problems. I put a bunch of big 3-400 lb sandstone rocks, that sometimes surface in the fields around here, about every 5', along the side of the drive way, as the dumb bastards around here have to use our driveway as the only turn-around spot there is, apparently.  I'm hoping to find an oil pan hung on one a those rocks, but it hasn't happened, yet!Wink

Had numerous mailbox fatalities at our old farmhouse. Kinda ran in that neighborhood as there were usually multiple neighbors suffering from baseball bat pranks. Anyway one Sunday afternoon a neighboring county’s sheriff squad car came driving down our lane. Sheriff had found our smashed mailbox in one of his county’s town 35 miles away, with it’s still legible street address. He was a dedicated soul. He handed us our wrecked mailbox & apologized for his suspected hoodlums from this town. After that, we never had anymore trouble. Think that Sheriff caught his suspects...
