Anyone have experience rebuilding a wobble box on a Gleaner platform? Have a 800 series on a R62. Previous owner broke the box off the skid plate. It had beat the mount holes out badly before KABOOM. Anyway a lot of new parts and put back together and everything seems pretty much right except a little play when you rock it back and forth. I'm thinking the beating did some harm to the box so need to get it fixed one way or another. Seems like every body just switches out which may be the way to go. Finding info on repair procedure is difficult. Anyone been there done that? The fix it shop think he had not slowed the head drive when going to beans but no one knows for sure.

I had a gear box rebuilt once...should have just bought a new one as the rebuild was over the cost of a new one! as for the wobble box, call a combine salvage yard, see what they have

I'm amazed no one has any experience with a wobble box. Must be the 3rd rail of combines.

Can it be converted to the SCH Pro-Drive system?

I suppose it could. I'm guessing that gets spendy. Junkyard wants $500 for a 90 day used one. A little more than that buys ALL new bearings. Think I'd rather have a rebuilt by me with new parts VS an unknown quantity. It's just "common" brg preload stuff. Right?

Steve, where is the lost motion you are describing? What part does it effect? Thanks, Tracy

It's in the crankshaft brg. The big nut that gets staked sets the preload and it is " loose". Not really loose but it's not tight. The brgs which hold frame around crankshaft have tight/loose feel when turned. Couldn't feel that just rotating pulley.

Hi steve,i have the same head ,the box is an easy rebuild. Sometimes the play can just be movement in the 3 hole bearing clamps, as they get worn from the bearings trying to move in them.

Steve, I have not seen the wobble box on a Gleaner, but understand how it works. Sounds like something is slightly out of round with the tight then loose spots. If the threads on the nut are not a snug fit, I would try a new nut. Any play on the nut will just lead to trouble down the road. JMHO, Tracy

The tight/loose on the swivel is because it's riding on tapered rollers and only swings back and forth 4in? plus lack of proper care. The big nut takes play out of 2 opposing tapered rollers on crankshaft then gets staked. Read where crankshaft should take 21-28 inch pounds to rotate.

Jay, a wobble box is part of a combine grain head that drives the cutter bar sickle making it move back and forth.

The center bearings are cone/cup and the preload is set via the staked nut you describe. Needs to be set to zero free play and a very slight pre load. Can be adjusted if the seals are ok - the front /back bearings are the cone/cup as well. They are shim adjusted again to zero play by removing shims. The high wear point is the bottom shaft and needle bearing  housed in a large ball that fits in the fearing flange. The entire assy can be replaced or one can purchase the cap/zerk/bearing/seal separate. The issue is the bottom shaft develops ridges and grooves that might not be usable with a new needle brg. In that case we use a roller brg with lock collar of the same ID as the shaft and new flanges.  ANY wobble box that ANY 'free play' is in need of repair. There is no allowable play anywhere as one moves the belt pulley clockwise then CCW...

Gee Tim,I wish you had thrown out that idea about putting a ball brg on that pin. Could have saved a few bucks. Oh well.
