| I"ll probably be shamed for putting this subject in the tractor section. However, I think most of you have heard on the news about the explosion that took place at the Hoover Dam today. And. of course the Hoover Dam is still being powered by those mighty Allis-Chalmers turbines yet. Has anyone heard a status on their health and well being? Was there any known damage to them? Hoping they are safe and still running. Thanks in advance for any status report! |

i thought they said on the news that it was a TRANSFORMER outside on the deck... and no internal damage to the Plant .. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

| Power plant transformers are usually protected by concrete barriers so that if they explode and/or start on fire, they don't wipe out other critical items. Sounds like these were designed as such?? |

YES... normal mode of failure is not "explode".... it is to catch fire due to overheating... They have 1000's of gallons of oil inside ( as cooling and insulation)... EXPLODE is a Media term for effect.... It is possible, but not normal.... they usually set on the OUTSIDE of the building wall in a row, OPEN to weather. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

It's being reported as a transformer, but that doesn't look like a transformer to me, looks more like a line circuit breaker. Either way, they're filled with oil for cooling and insulation, and they DO get hot. If it's a breaker, there's about a 100-gallon compressed air reservoir and fast-acting valve in there to throw the breaker arm open AND extinguish the flame (of the electric arc that results). Notice that all the other breakers look just fine, but this particular breaker has a water sprinkler pipe above it? I suspect this breaker gets some pretty heavy loading. Be that as it may, Lake Mead is extremely low, and if it falls much further, they'll no longer have sufficient fall elevation to run any of the turbines. ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest. |
