| My service manual says to use sealant on both sides of the gasket . Just wanted to ask what you fellas use ? My head is still at the machine shop . I'm just trying to round everything up . Probably buy new bolts . Guess they're just reg grade 8 bolts ? THANKS !! |

Yes, steel rings around cylinder. IIRR, there is a special head bolt with a washer in center of head. Probably should replace the washer. HTH Tracy ------------- No greater gift than healthy grandkids! |

| You want new head bolts? That's fine but unless they are pitted, not needed. There is no "special" head bolt in the center location on a G-149 engine. |

| Back from the machine shop . They found 2 stripped bolt holes that they fixed . Also a bent pushrod and a broken rocker arm support . Brenda at Sandy Lake to the rescue on them . Sad thing is when I put it all back together and pressure test the cooling system I may still have coolant in the oil . Oh well . Fav son should post pics soon . |

When tightening down of loosening the rocker arm, make sure you do it evenly, not all at one tower. It will help out. HTH Tracy ------------- No greater gift than healthy grandkids! |

| Thanks Tracy I'll keep that in mind. I'm thinking that support was broken the last time someone was in there. It had those 2 washers under it. Not sure why? That stud was also slightly bent. I'm guessing that's where the bent pushrod came from? Thanks again |

| Do not over tighten rocker hold down bolts. That is what brakes the stands. MACK |

| Finally have all my parts . Noticed I have no sleeve stand out on the block . Book says I need .002 -.005 . Starting to think I should pull this engine and get it rebuilt ? That should fix my coolant in oil problem . Imagine that'll cost at least $1,000 ? It's only money right ? Thanks ! |

You might buy the parts for that price, Although you just had the head done, so now onto the short block. Those rocker arm are common to be found broken on the 138/149/160 engines. ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

| I have never seen an A-C gas engine EVER have a sleeve stand-out problem. But, I sure have seen a lot of Buda/A-C diesels, as that is their biggest flaw. Do you realize what you are now getting into ?? New sleeves and possible block decking or even cut the counterbores square. I really don't think you have an issue. It may not be .005", but I'll bet it isn't flush and even then, it isn't a high compression diesel. Coolant in the oil wasn't diagnosed properly, so now you're guessing again. |

| Thanks Dr Allis. I guess as was already suggested I should put the head back on and put 12 lbs of pressure on the cooling system overnight and see if I have a leak out of the oil pan. Thanks again |

| Update . Finally got a rad pressure tester (Auto Zone) that would work . It held 10 PSI all night with no coolant leak . Should have everything back together soon and finish the oil change I started a month ago . THANKS ! |

Another update. Finally ran my tractor about 15 minutes. Runs good. No leaks. Is it too soon to re torque the head and manifold ? Also check valve clearance ? Thanks! I set valves at .015 Head at 80 lbs Manifold at 25 |

| I would advise running for an hour or so to be sure it is heat soaked. Park it and come back tomorrow when totally cold and do your re-torque and reset valves. .015 is good on 226's but don't know about the little ones. Doc will know. |
