I have a 1938 ac B To i replace oil seal on left axle...replaced as i took it apart Now trans has noise grinding....Tractor ran perfect before And idea what i may have done WRONG ty ray

which seal exactly did you replace ? the one behind the drum , at wheel hub or the one at differential i am gonna guess you mistakened a shim for a gasket

that does seem odd... As you remove the carrier, the differential will drop a little... but when you reinstall, the carrier should slide back up into alignment.. Normally as long as you retain the original shims, you have no problem.... Backlash and preload should remain the same.. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

| yes i put every back as i took out 2 shim used diff race cover though..to day i took shims out..SAME NOISE as before...im confused |

you can not change the bearing housing, bearing race, or shims and just assume everything is right.... The shims changed the bearing preload and backlash in the gears. Every housing / bearing will be slightly different in dimension and require a specific shim pack..... You need to take a couple measurements.. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

the purpose of the shims is to take up and SIDE TO SIDE clearance or movement of the shaft.... You normally check that when the PTO housing is off.............. I think what i would do now is start with and extra shim or two and tighten the cap... then you need to PUSH or jack the differential shaft IN and OUT and see how much it move with a MIKE... If it moves .005 inch, then i would take out .005 inch so you basically have ZERO clearance.... If you put in a .010 inch shim and you have .001 endshake, then you were .009 TOO TIGHT to start with..... TIGHT or LOOSE will give you a noise. Going to be hard to check backlash in the gears, but that should not have changed much if you still have the right bearing PRELOAD.. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

the book recommends to remove BOTH final drives to do the inspcetion... and the PTO housing... but what you are looking for is SIDE MOVEMENT, if you can do that with the housing in place. ??

what you might do is put the bearing retainer on without shims and just "SNUG" up the bolts so there is zero bearing clearance, but not bend the retainer.. It will be setting out a little from the transmisison housing.. measure the GAP between the retainer and the trans housing... then disassemble and add shims to fill that gap.. Since your torqueing the bolts TIGHT after install, you might add an extra .001 or 2 shim pack...... That might be about the best your going to do... at least you would have a MEASUREMENT to compare to what shims you are adding right now to see if you were TIGHT or REAL TIGHT ??? ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

what wrong with your original diff race cover? usable ? assuming you left it as was when you got it out ... grab a new seal off ebay pound old seal out of your orignal cover with hammer+ screwdriver and gently pound new one in with a wooden dowel. I think it should be a national oil seal #450444 then put it back in as you found it when you started seal should be like $15 if your 80 and made it this far id say your doing pretty good!! |

sorry Ray... we cant see the bearing / cover to give you any better advice.. You said the original cover BROKEN when tightening ? Maybe it was in a bind and put a DING in the bearing / or race something on the bevel shaft.... Dont know what else we can do to help at this point. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

there are a LOT of Bs that "make noise"... As long as you have plenty of shims and the bearing is not TOO TIGHT, you might be able to run it for YEARS with a noise. ??
