I am looking for some information on a 1673 Caterpillar motor that is in our old dump truck. I have been wanting to get it up and running again but have had little success. It ran when parked. (20 some years ago)
It turns over and will fire with a snort of either but won’t run on it own power. I have found little to no information on the internet on the 1673 motor. I do have a service manual for it but am striking out on making it run.

Most likely lost seals in the transfer pump and is not drawing fuel

I am having trouble getting pressure out of the main pump. Not sure if it has a manual shut off as well as an electric run/ stop. It’s been too long since I ran it to remember.
Injection cups are cleaned and have a good spray pattern. No real decent pressure at the injectors though.
On the old dozers dose the throttle pedal have to be out to run or pressed in? What was kill on them?

On D6B-C-D you pulled throttle fully back past idle to kill. My 3406 had ele solinoid which pushed in down low in rear of pump to pull rack back through pivoting to kill. No power-no start. Solinoid failed mid day and shut me down in middle of town. Removed it and borrowed hacksaw from city worker and cut pushrod off. Reinstalled to finish day. Put in high gear to kill it. Got new one as soon as possible.
Like Dave, bet it's transfer pump or farther back. Pull "out" line off pump and crank to see if it's pumping fuel. Does the injection pump have the plate up front on the side? Can remove and see if rack is moving fwd to full fuel. It could just be "stuck" alittle. If it's got it,can pry gently in notch to see if it'll move. Could have a plunger sticking and not letting rack move. BE CAREFULL!

Pull electric shut off off and see if it's working.

Electric shut off is working. Will have to look into it more to see if the rack is stuck. I do have good fuel to the pump. No leaks. Fixed that last fall.
Thanks for the help this far.

Ok not likely but beware if a plunger gets  a minor corrosion from non use it is possible to score the barrel and cause the  plunger to not be able to turn (which controls fuel delivery) so you could end up with a situation where rack sticks in FULL FUEL !!!! I would want to know I had control of the rack before it runs.

Thanks for the advise. Going to have to round up some tools and see what this pump is/isn't doing.

would an external fuel pump work on this?

I see on the data plate "rack setting" so I'm sure it's got the diamond shaped plate on the side. That's where you attach the rack travel gage.

I would guess the new cleaner diesel is most of the problem.  Would not surprise me if you need internals of injection pump cleaned/freed up. Not oily like old diesel that parts don't stick in the pump.

Finding the rack gauge seems to be almost impossible. Unless I am missing something. Gives a part no. 1-8M530. Also checked the bypass out and it seems to be seated and clean. Still crank but no injection pressure.

Shameless. What do you mean by external pump?

You don't need a rack gage just be able to see the rack. Can't see that area in your picture. Trying to find pic on the net.Found a grader engine(1673) and looks like maybe a hex plug on front is where the rack is...poor picture. There should be fuel in and fuel out lines for fuel manifold of pump and it has to have fuel in it for the plungers to draw from.

Ditch...i'm asking if like an electric pump can be installed back before the injection pump to keep pressure on the injection pump?

The fuel transfer pumps on these are like a small hydraulic pump, but HUGE for handling Fuel, a electric pump will not deliver enough volume.

o-k...just a suggestion...thanks

Main aspect on the rack in the injection pump is to make sure it moves at all, remove access point cover, determine where the rack end is with a depth test, screwdriver, small punch whatever, if was in STOP then take to run, that rack HAS TO move to full fuel position to just start that engine.  No movement will not ever start.  As for the Transfer Pump, the supply/return checks are on the filter housing and return port of pump and may appear clean but can still be locked up, these should be disassembled and cleaned then put back on if the rack does move.  A bad fuel line tank to transfer pump can block fuel flow or leak enough air to not ever pull fuel.

When you say "good fuel to the pump" does that mean from transfer to injection pump? When all is well you should be able to disconnect the return line from injection pump and have fuel flowing out  when cranking engine. Starter speed will not be will not be pushing fuel like a fire hose but should be pushing steady flow. Mechanical Cat fuel systems don't have a large amount of return fuel. If transfer pump is pushing fuel through injection pump fuel manifold and out return fitting you should have everything you need to run. In that case your rack must not be traveling to full fuel. Even at full fuel, they don't flow a large amount out the injector line when you "crack" a line at pump or injector. Whether Cat or Bosch the rack goes to full fuel to start and the govenor  quickly pulls it back at start up. So what is the situation?

Thanks for the help everyone. Haven't had any time to work on it lately, most likely won't unit we get pushed out of the fields.
