Gentlemen, I am toying with the idea of building a log splitter for my CA. I have a 3 point adapter already so attachment isn't really an issue. Has anyone frankensteined one of their own? Does this machine produce enough flow/pressure on the auxiliary circuit to make this feasable? I work at a fabrication shop, so materials and such aren't much of an issue for me. Guidance is much appreciated as always!

Hydraulics is going to be the big issue. The CA system is a high pressure low volume type. All modern systems are high volume low pressure. It can work, but the cylinder would move extremely slowly. They are also one way. It has pressure to extend the cylinder but not retract it. Back in the day, the weight of the implement retracted the cylinder. Basically, you would need to build a completely separate hydraulic system for it to work properly. | wont work very well. my brother in law had a home cobbled on the three point it was two slow and inconvenient. a trail log splitter can be left where your working and even the cheep TSC ones have a 2 speed pump. they move much faster until they hit the load then build more pressure. the farm has a home built that we use on an IH 1086. it works ok we have the flow control turned all the way up about 15 gpm and it has two way hydraulics. your CA makes about a 1/2 gallon a minutes and is only one way. |

That would be the way to go with a CA.On the other hand you can buy a 35 ton self contained splitter from Northern Tool with a Honda motor for about $2000 that splits vertical or horizontal.Best money I ever spent burning firewood.Use the CA to tow it around.

As mentioned above, the ones already designed and built will be the best Cost/workability option. Maybe if you have a lot of stuff laying around and time to build/rebuild you may end up with a workable item. Consider driving something from the PTO: 540 PTO speed- most pump work best above 2000RPM. How you plan to run the pump ant it efficient speed? Just doing it with belts won't transfer the power needed without multiple belts. Chain drive is noisy and will wear fast in an overdrive scenario. Why try to re-invent the wheel  ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

40 years ago we had a 8N FORD with a loader frame and front engine mounted hydraulic pump mounted off the crank ... bucket and loader were off, but the main frame was intact.... I bought remote valve and mounted it to a 3 point splitter that we made.. Ran a supply and return hose to the raise / lower lever for the loader that was by the seat... We had a bungie cord that you would pull the raise lower lever back and HOLD ..... and then you had supply pressure to the remote 2 way valve on the splitter, with a return hose to the loader valve... Used it for 15 years. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

| A friend of mine made 1 for mmy serries4. It has a hydraulic valve built into it. I wired the handle back on the series 4 so I had hyd all the time. I sold the serries 4 back to the origional owners son and have run the splitter with my 200. I am going to buy a gas powered unit from menards in the very near future. Mine is made on a 8 or 10" I beam with a big cylinder. I think you will need a bigger oil sump that your CA has. |

. Pto pump, use square tubing for some of the frame and seal it off for your reservoir tank. Or Craigslist/FB marketplace, plenty of three point log splitters right now. Hard to find in the fall... .
