greetings, my 160 clutch is not disengaging. looking up through the panel in the bottom of the tranny, i can see that the throw-out bearing guide bearing shaft is only moving about 1/2 to (3/4 inch max). is that enough to disengage the clutch????? any ideas welcome thx |

I don't think the throw out bearing travels great distances. My 160 has about 5/8" free play till resistance, then the pedal has enough travel to bump stop to that shaft protruding from the clutch housing. Maybe adjust the free travel (using turnbuckle) to about 5/8" and test. Seem like not so much pedal travel to release the transmission disc, then fair amount more to release the PTO.

...or less. Usually there is a lot more movement on the pedal than there is inside.

thx for the reply, i tried turning the turnbuckle to adjust the pedal. pedal wont move. it looks like the shaft the pedal is on is splined. so when i try to adjust the pedal it only pushes pack against theshaft that pushes on the throw-out bearing. any ideas n that? thx

Do you have the operator's manual? Page 42 shows the clutch adjustment. The free pedal travel should be 3/4". They show where that is measured from, end of the foot rest platform. It also says "Excessive pedal free travel can result in difficulty in disengaging the clutch and shifting the transmission". That's the problem you have. I seem to recall when the free play gets to 1.5" the clutch won't release. Adjust the turnbuckle to get the 3/4". Yous is not rusted up? Metric turnbuckle, custom, don't snap it. The clutch pedal is not splined to the shaft it rotates on. That shaft is there to activate the left brake. That brake lever is splined tight. However the clutch pedal is a slip fit over that shaft. You will not see the clutch pedal move when adjusting the turnbuckle. Not too many people here have 160 experience. But plenty have dealt with two stage clutches. If you could post some pictures that may help. The service manual has information on rebuilding the clutch. I got a headache reading it.

Just had both of my clutches rebuilt last year. As Brian said it’s a 2 stage clutch. He is also correct about the 3/4” free play. After installing the clutch I adjusted the free play just like Brian said, pull the pin out and rotate the yoke depending on which direction you need to go to get the 3/4”. The throw isn’t that far compared to the amount of travel the clutch pedal moves. If you adjust it correctly and still have issues then I would say it’s time to split it and inspect the throwout bearing and clutch. I can look in my manual to see if other recommendations. Have you by chance removed any shims from the 6 mounting bolts at the flywheel? OK, from what i see and what your describing and what i am seeing it appears that the pedal is frozen to the shaft. I have and 1 1/2 of free play on the pedal. ill se if i can free it up and go from there. thank you for the good info, i really appreciate it. |

Soak it with Kroil overnight and then gently tap the side of the pedal at the shaft to see if it comes loose. | I just noticed that you asked if i removed any of the shims for the PTO clutch. answer is that yes I did. PTO would not engage so i removed one pair from each of the three spots on the clutch. do you think that could be the problem? I thought about putting them back to se if that fixes the issue i am now having. good question sir |

There are 6 bolts, 3 shims apiece from the factory. If you only removed from 3 then that is definitely a problem. Also make sure the flat side of the shim is facing outward. | i did remove a total of 6 shims. I wasnt very clear on that point. also got the pedal freed up and adjusted to 3/4 inch free play, still wont go into gear. could the clutch plate be frozen? |

Are you positive the the flat edge of the shims are facing out? They will interfere with the clutch if not and will cause the clutch not to work and have the exact issue you are having…trust me I know because I put them in flat side facing in and will not work. The clutch would only stick to the flywheel if the tractor has been setting for many years outside.
