I got a trans with good gears, but most everything else seems to be junk (cracked case, rusty/pitted bearings, worn input shaft).

The main shaft input splines are well worn - 1/2 gone wear edges.

Are the splines heat treated?

If not, I plan to weld them up, turn the o.d. down to spec, and cut in new splines.

At first glance, the CA and B seem to use the same mainshaft. Anyone know (verify common part # CA seems to be 70225410 and C is 76111242)? I may have a good B shaft.
Thanks

the CA-B look the same on the front and allows the trans UNITS to be interchanged.. The CA is a 4 speed with a bigger hydraulic pump... so internal differences.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Really?

A B/C pto assembly bolts onto a CA trans housing.

The CA and B/C main shaft have the same stick out from the trans housing.

CA and B/C main shaft ends have identical spline count, o.d., and snap ring locations.

I bet a B/C end gear on the end of a CA mainshaft would allow the use of a 2 piston B/C hydraulic pump as well as B/C pto with a CA trans and visa versa to use a CA end gear to use a CA pto and 4 piston pump on a B/C.

Once I tear down the ib trans case, I'll know if there is more internal casting clearance to fit the extra forward gear in a CA case.

I bought a B that had the tapered spline bull Axle damaged when the cast steel hub was loose and wobbled around on it... I welded up the axle, turned the taper back on the lathe, then recut the splines with a hand grinder wheel...I tried to fix the hub but it came loose about once a year. I finally bought a good HUB and works great on the repaired axle.

My point is the Shaft was not real hard as it was worn by the cast steel HUB.. Harder than a grade 2 bolt, but not like a grade 8. ......... I would think the trans shaft was similar..

I tried the weld and angle grinder method on a garden tractor and got similar results.

Now I have a milling machine and indexer to go with my 36" metal lathe.

CA shaft is longer then B/C

I'd look for a good used shaft.

The amount of time welding it up and machining it back will be monumental! Getting the geometry right on those splines won't be easy! You might be able to find a 'gear-cutter' with the right profile, that would help a bunch. Even then getting it indexed correctly every time will be a challenge. It would be a tricky machining project for even very experienced persons.

I have an entire CA rear axle with transmission;  about 2 hours from Harrisburg

Pack it in anti-seize or moly-kote paste and I'll bet it will last for many more years.
