Wondering if anyone here has experience with a a ford 4000 three cylinder diesel, my problem is it runs very rough and if ran long enough will ultimately die, I have replaced the fuel filter, replaced all the rubber lines, made sure fuel is returning to tank and have cleaned the screen in the tank etc put in fresh fuel still won’t hardly run, when it does run it sounds like a flutter or miss and has no power or throttle response. I’m lost on this one, thinking it may be the CAV pump? Going to try and post a link to a YouTube video of it running to help out. Thanks! https://youtube.com/shorts/xCJoWRF4YOo?feature=share" rel="nofollow - https://youtube.com/shorts/xCJoWRF4YOo?feature=share

It sounds like it is running on 2 cylinders ??? Could be the pump or could be an injector problem ?
------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Definite miss-fire on 1-cylinder. No puffing exhaust smoke, so it has to be a lack of fuel delivery to that 1-cylinder. Pull all injectors and injection pump and have them gone thru. This assumes the starter is turning the engine over smoothly/evenly, indicating compression on all cylinders, which I think it is OK.

Thanks, think I’ll do a compression tests just to check but yeah I think it’s fuel related

3 cyl CAV pumps do seem to eat the cam ring more often than 4 or 6 cyls. If it lost one lobe, it would lose the one cyl.

All i've ever seen on a 4000 is the early 4 cylinder ones with a vertical Roosa DB, or the later 3 cylinder ones with a CAV DPA.

OK. I knew the 4-cylinder model 5000 and 7000 series were all Simms version, and assumed the 3-banger was too. That Red-Tiger 4-banger with the Roosa Master pump was a reminder of how the D-19 deezel was built.....just a gas engine with a different cylinder head ......

The 6X & 6Y tractors have the Simms pumps, with the 7A series the CAV pump began use. The 1964 and older 4 cylinder diesels have a Roosa Master pump
------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

we done a major overhaul on a 67 4000 with a 3cyl and m and w turbo last winter for a guy ran like that it had a cav pump it ran like that because it had been overheated bad from a hole in the radiator and just lost compression that turbo really gives it a good sound

What type of fuel filter ? IF it is the CAV type there are 2 different filters one correct one not - IF it is the type that takes the element with the holes in the top - the other filter will fit but the square oring can compress down in the top edges and block the fuel flow. I was given the NAPA line to call about issues like this and was told by a NAPA guy "we sell more filters than anyone in the world - we don't need your input!" We had over 20 tractors in the shop with wrong Napa filter issues in the CAV system. Just my 2 cents applicable or not.

Those filter seals are incorrectly installed by the owners.

My Ford 3600 and a friends Massey 2135 both had this issue. It was the CAV pump. Ford owners manual says to have the injectors done every 1200 hours as well. It’s pricey, but I’d have the pump rebuilt and injectors tested and clean the whole fuel system. I run my stuff over to Superior Injection in Detroit and everything is ready the next day.

I get all my fuel filters from my dealership, in the past they been the same price or cheaper than auto parts stores. My Massey Ferguson tractors have CAV pumps on them so I guess I eliminate that problem.
