can you guys BUY it ? there's NO 1/5" ABS up here in Ontario.... just checked Homedepot.com( US site) , they don't even LIST it ! jes wondering.....

ABS is the BLACK plastic drain pipe . Normally use 2 inch on sink / tub and 3 inch on main runs, then 4 inch out to septic tank........... what are you looking at ?
How about PVC drain pipe ? ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

| Never seen any in use here since the 70s. All have switched to PVC. Was difficult to get for a while and significant raise in price according to contractors I speak with. Is PVC not approved in your area? Local code or Canadian code? I chat with a former Canuck but he had not itemized the differences between our code and yours. Canada code suggests why I see ABS in those TV renovation shows as they are produced in Canada. |

I work for a local pharmacy doing remodels so elderly/handicapped can stay in their houses! At least half of our projects have ABS vent and drain pipe. Our plumber cannot find ABS pipe or fittings anywhere! He uses a ‘mission’ fitting (rubber with clamps) and then uses PVC pipe and fittings to complete the project. ------------- Greg Kroeker 1950 WD with wide front and Freeman trip loader |

My work takes me all over the US and Canada, and I've been places where ABS is available, as well as PVC... and I've been some places where there's just PVC, and others just ABS. It makes no sense to me the reasons why the areas do, or don't allow certain types... each has it's own application circumstances, and many times, the circumstances aren't critical enough to be particular of one over the other, but sometimes it's the other way around... and SOMETIMES... you're looking for a product in the home store, and when you ask, they'll tell you "You need to take your special contractor's license to a PRO SUPPLY WHOLESALER buy THAT..."  I think there's a bit too much governmental influence on this aspect of business in many places... Fortunately, I can obtain what I need along the way, carry it in my truck... and use it as I need it, and not be pigeonholed by that insanity.  ------------- Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest. |

Are you sure this is the kind of black drainage pipe you want? I've heard that frequent leaks can occur if not installed correctly. Be careful if you are going to attach the purchased pipes yourself. I understand that you want to save money on special installation services. But leaks are dangerous to the emergence of different types of mold. I'm not saying you can get a very toxic one, but black can grow from water on the floor. I know what I'm talking about because we've had that happen. My wife was afraid the kids would breathe mold spores and get asthma. |

| ABS pipe is not available in Wisconsin but some adapters are. I was told it was banned because of fire code. It supposedly burns with a very smokey fire. I have seen some travel trailers with the black ABS pipe. When doing repairs cross over into Minnesota and purchase ABS pipe there. |

ABS is made with a lot of petroleum. It will burn on it's own once lighted. PVC is made with salt . It will only burn if another heat source keeps it hot enough. Used to be that you would see ABS where there was a lot of oil production and more PVC where fire codes prohibit the use of ABS . A friend that worked in Texas and Colorado said that was all he saw on those areas . Chicago won't allow ABS for fire code reasons . Illinois plumbing code will allow you to use a green transition solvent to attach the ABS to PVC. Hard to find but works well. The ABS doesn't seem to hold up as well as PVC. The line from the house to the septic tank at the farm is ABS and will soon be replaced with foam core sch40 PVC when the new tank goes in. But it has lasted over 55 years. Way back when I spent a few years working on restaurant equipment one county code required that the drain plumbing under the sinks be 1 1/2 or 2 inch copper and that would only last a couple of years before the chemicals they used ate it up. ------------- Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God. |

| All the floor drain lines at the nuke on the Clean Side of things were series 303 Austenitic SS, 35 years and chemical burn thru began to work them over. |

I would not use FOAM CORE - PVC for inground burial in a septic system , unless you bed it properly in sand or pea gravel which is compacted when bedding pipe . It has little strength to lateral loading and will warp and settle creating low spots and dips in pipe . Did repair jobs on quite a few instillations where foam core was used underground and settling created problems . ------------- Faith isn't a jump in the dark. It is a walk in the light.
