| Of the the four planters here two are used yearly. In each of them the three wing nut used to hold and drive the plates what tool if any is used to loosen/tighten when changing plates. Is there a special socket or do we have to resort a hammer? I ask because I don’t have an owners manual and uncle bought his used and has always used a hammer. Certainly there is a better method? |

It's been a few years since I had a 385 but I am certain I only hand tightened. Might have used some channel lock pliers to break loose after setting a while. Steve

We always used a flat washer against the plate like the 78 series. I feel you are tightening the nut on the shaft due to rust or dirt build up on the threaded shaft rather than squeezing the plate against the cast flat washer that is driven by the roll pin. Put some WD40 or other cleaner on the shaft and run the nut in all the way to the end of the threads a time or two to be sure. Yes ok to tap on the wings but should not be necessary. The thing we are most concerned about on 385 is seed disc edge seal and makng sure we have a minimum of 2 water column inches of air pressure. ------------- When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money.. |

There is a flat washer between the nut and plate but didn't think of lubing the threads. I'm not a fan of using the hammer. I became a plumber cuz I couldn't make a living swinging a hammer. So I came up with this  I'm kind of a tool junkie so I made socket from scrap lying around and now can use a ratchet to turn the nut. And yes, I would not mind having an owners manual.
