From memory, we ran an ALLIS 4 bottom snap coupler "tail wheeled" plow, then upgraded to a "steerable" snap coupler plow of the same 4/16 configuration. Both of these plows had a "gauge" wheel on the ass end of the frame as memory servesConfusedConfused, WHY ??
The replacement plow was a White 508 5/16 to match the newly acquired XT and it had no gauge wheel or any machined holes in the frame to mount one Ouch. My ?? is, why was the gauge wheel necessary in the first place for ALLIS plows ?

Pretty self explanatory
Lots of brands offered them to maintain a more consistent plowing depth.

Tail wheels on sc plows had raise and float. No way to control depth therefore the gauge wheel. What sort of stop was on your White tail wheel?

Different brands had different ideas of how to do it. The closer the depth control is to the last bottom the better.  Alongside is probably best. But, more wheels cost more money.

On many plows the "tail" wheel has an adjustment to also act a a depth wheel. These features are explained in the operators manuals and never read by the "steering wheel holders" .

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

The white 508 was the bare bones base model. If memory is working you could bump up to the 548 for more options but the 588 was king. My grandpa bought a new 2-155 white and white 5/20 588 plow in around 1980 I think. 1 big difference was the clearance for plowing corn stalk ground.

It was the rear cylinder FULLY retracted WinkWink !! IMO, best plow ever made WinkWink !!
No stop of any kind , in fact, at the headland, we didn't even raise the tail cylinder after raising the 3 point ClapClap .

If memory serves me right you aren’t even a steering wheel holder. Didn’t daddy rent out the farm to someone else?

Once again.LOLLOLLOLLOL You have no idea what you are talking about. I really don't care what somebodys post count is, seems you are the one always worried about that. Nothing in your reply is even close to the truth, but hey, whatever makes you feel better about yourself. For the record, I've probably pulled a plow through more acres than you, and unlike you, I actually farm for a living.

99% of Free's 4566 posts are absolute garbage. We know it and he knows it. That would mean only 46 actual posts of his are worth a chit. And, he's only been a member since 2017, many of us have been on here since 2009 and prior on the old forum. Regardless, you guys sure struck a nerve with him this timeLOL.

Yes; Apparently he doesn't realize that operators manuals are still available for many pieces of older equipment. Lucky for him the original owner got the plow adjusted right so he only had to hook up and go (steering wheel holder) The small stop bolt in those tailwheels is probably not seen by anyone not looking for it. For the record, I've been plowing since the 60s and never no-tilled a single acre.
