Have you verified the gauge is bad and not wiring or the transmitter in the fuel tank, (sender/float)?

It's not my tractor, but supposedly it works, just not when the lights are turned on.  A new reproduction gauge has been installed.

that sounds like a wiring issue rather than a bad part. I'd check the 12VDC feeding the gauge to ensure it is not dropping off when the lights are switched on. If it works without the lights it seems the variable resistor, (sending unit) is working correctly.

Thanks Codger, I'll pass that along!

This interprets as a corroded, or compromised electrical  connection feeding the gauge. The variable resistor is usually connected to the negative side of the gauge and a switched voltage applied to the other positive side.

Thanks again, Codger, I passed this along to the owner as well!

I drove a Steiger that had the gauges quit working when the lights were on. Turned out, grounding issues were at fault. Apparently it can ground through the filaments in the bulbs and that causes issues.
