My 1954 WD-45 tractor runs extremely rough when cold. I know these engines always need a little choke to get warmed up but when I apply any choke it's too rich and kills it. I just can't seem to get it leaned out to run normal. This started when my Dad borrowed the tractor to tow something, put it away and it started leaking gas out of it. He mistakenly turned the L needed in thinking it was the fuel shut off. Ever since then I cannot get it to run properly. Here is a list of everything I have done up to this point:

Carburetor: Marvel-Schebler TSX 464

1. New needle and seat, set float to 1/4" from gasket surface to float

2. Cleaned all jets and passages

3. New carburetor gaskets, manifold to carb gasket

4. Cleaned fuel bowl, good flow to carburetor

5. Block sanded both halved of carburetor to remove any warping in the cast iron

6. I did some leak tests with WD-40 around the manifold to carb and manifold to head, no leaks

I really think something is amiss with this carburetor because once it warms up it runs perfectly like nothing it wrong. It just seems like I can't lean it out enough.

From your description I wonder if it is carburator at all. Could it be an ignition issue masking as carb? Points too close will have weak spark and maybe cold it isn't enough. Might want to check it out. Pull coil wire from cap and hold 1/2 inch from block while cranking. Should jump that far and blue is better than orange.

I've come to the conclusion that it is carburetor icing. After it runs 3-5 minutes and the manifold gets warm it smooths right out and runs with full power. I found some articles describing my exact issue. I'll try it a few times and see how things go. Runs fine in the summer.

It also forms a lost of frost where the carburetor bolts to the manifold.

Maybe try putting a 100 watt heat lamp on the manifold for an hour prior to start... That should prove a point ?

I was going to use a hair dryer I use for removing stickers to test the theory as well. There's no snow here in western PA so I have no use for the tractor as of now. I will report back when I test.

One of my WD's would act up a bit when I would plow snow. I solved it by putting a shroud around the carb and a part of the lower manifold about an inch or two away to hold the heat in. Made it out of camper siding aluminum. Looked goofy, but it worked.

My 45 has iced up like that during colder weather. I bent up a piece of tin that I stick inside the frame rail, and under the edge of the hood.
It helps considerably if you never run it above a low idle till it warms up good.

Mine iced but never that quick? At start up even before engine is warm?

My WD-45 does it at startup. It's fine before it starts. It's just the venturi effect with the cold air + humidity that ices it up until it warms up. Once mine is warm ~ 3-5 minutes idling or just above idle it runs good. This is my first time owning a WD-45 as my CA has never done this so I'm learning. In the summer it runs perfect cold or hot.

So I looked into this "warm up issue" and I talked with Steve in NJ from B & B Custom Circuits. He explained to me about the ignition system on these tractors in detail I wasn't aware of. It ended up being I had a coil on there (put on by previous owner) without a resistor and it burned the points and coil up. I put a new 12v resisted coil on, Blue Streak point and condenser and the tractor has new life breathed into it! It starts right up and has full power from the get go.

It seems we learn something new every day haha.
