I made a video about how to address the gear popping out problems on A-C D-series and 100 series tractors. Moving the detent will only help if your gear is still halfway good, if the gear is completely shot, nothing will help except to replace the gear.

This video series totals almost 1 hr, lots of time went into it, I hope it is of great help.
The tractor used for demonstration purposes is a D15 series II.

THANKS for taking the time to do this Alex . Only watched a few minutes but I've learned several things . Our diesel D 15 slips out of third going downhill not under load , and I've wondered about the fix .

All the ones I've done get a second groove added on the neutral ball so there are two detents holding it. I also add a spring (70229458) inside the existing springs for more detent ball pressure which adds to the "hold-it-in-gear" fix.

I agree on the 2nd groove in the rail for the neutral ball is a good idea. But if the gear splines are worn too much, adding the 229458 spring and the neutral detent spring groove to hold the gear engaged against the force of the gear wanting to pop out just puts more wear on the fork. If the detent can't be moved enough to engage the collar onto good splines on the gear, seems like a person would be trading fork wear for time by adding the extra spring and neutral spring pressure.

Well, the deeper engagement trick is technically a band-aid anyway. If it wears out the fork and groove, then it's finally time for parts replacement.

GREAT job Alex!!

There was a problem when I tried the links though.  Numbers 2 & 6 went to a link on a Facebook page.
I went to the Youtube and these are correct, straight to Youtube.
