I bought a fairly new, new holland roll belt 460 and the biggest tractor I own is a 7000 and it seems it takes all it has to run it without the crop cutter, will a 7040 handle it, or what size should I be shopping for, would like to stick to the 7000 series because there are plenty around my area for sale.

Baling sorghum Friday with a 450 with crop cutter my 8030 was WORKING. My 8030 isn’t as fresh as once was and the sorghum was damp.

Chuck, for those of us not familiar, what size bale does a NH 460 baler make and what forage are you baling? We ran 2 VerMeer 605 series balers behind; Case 1175 (125hp), Allis 180 (70 hp) & 200 (115 hp) for over 25 yrs , on alfalfa / orchard grass mix. Made 60 - 100 acre x 3 cuttings of Hill land in west central Iowa. Used same tractors to windrow, rake, bale, & haul in and to feed in winter.

Crop cutter is a set of knives that can be extended from the floor of the baler to cut what your baling into smaller pieces.

I would think a 7040 as long as it's in good condition would run most any round baler. We have a 7045 and have 2 balers, a 4x5 and a 5x6 and have made "wet" 4x5's, no problem. Wouldn't put one on a large square baler, but seems a round would be just fine.

chuck, how will you be feeding the hay, and to what? You may not want to use the crop cutter. I use a feeder wagon, bought some cut hay, and the cows wasted a LOT of it, had a snow drift looking berm of hay all the way around the wagon where they would pull it out and slobber.

Crop cutter helps to prevent sorting with poor forages.

I would like to know if you have any trouble making a good round bale in dry hay with the cutter? Seems the Vermeer balers I have used love to role the long stems and the bales store better outside without a cover? That is one reason I square bale the later cuttings. I use a 185 most of the time with a 4x5 wet or dry. I kind of feel that it’s hard on the Baler to run a lot of extra Hp.

I've pulled a 530 Deere (without a crop cutter) behind our 7040 once to bale some corn stalks. Plenty of tractor for that. I've never run any other round baler, but our 7040 wasn't working hard with that one

I pull a vermeer 605m cornstalk special with an agco allis 9535. It's 135 horsepower. Their are days I wish I had a little more under the hood. I sure would want a power shift if I was baler tractor shopping!

My one ninety XT handles our RB56 Challenger baler quite well. XT is turned up above stock HP some (probably in the neighborhood of 120HP) No crop cutter on it, but it keeps the XT smoking! Lol!
