Looking for opinions on the Perkins 248 diesel. Generally have heard good things. Looking at a machine that PO says needs new engine or repair. Ad says head gasket was leaking. How is parts availability and cost for these engines? Thx.

I just did a Perkins complete rebuild in my 160 tractor. No issue getting engine parts. Good kit was around $650. Also bought a new cam and oil pump. Very happy with the Perkins. Good power and very fuel efficient.

I have owned two of them, I consider them one of the best 4 cyl. diesels around. Lots were made, I don't think part will be a problem.

The 236/248 Perkins used in the AC were industrial engines - no parts will interchange from the massey or common perkins side - dry sleeves are not finished and have to be precision honed to correct size - which means no inframe overhauls unless the stock sleeves are still within limits... MF used perkins sleeves that come finished... just a word to the ones who will become wise...
