| There's a topic on NAT about grinding/mixing "on-farm" vrs. commercial supply. Does anyone manufacture a G/M unit today ?? Back-in-the day, there were 3 guys that ran them, 2 were Gehls and the other was a New Holland ?? Just curious if these machines have been "shelved" by manufactures. |

| I believe Arts-way (spelling??) still manufactures them. We still use a NH 355 which does a nice job for any dry grain. If you are looking to purchase one, recommend the hydraulic augers. which were options. Very few mechanical gear boxes and smooth engagement at least on the NH machines. |

Is most of the livestock gone from your area? Or, have the operations gotten so large, that it’s more efficient, cost effective to contract that out? ------------- I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science. |

| Most large Dairies or Cattle feeders here use shelled corn with the Dairies grinding with a roller mill and blowing into a bunker silo as high moisture grain. Some have bins and grind dry shelled corn with a roller mill. One 7,000 cow dairy buys direct from a grain elevator. A few family operations grind with a hammer mill mixer and some fill Ag Bags with high moisture shelled corn using a hammer mill grinder mixer. I know of 1 person that cribs ear corn and grinds. |

I recall my years ago, I worked at Heathercrest Farms, just west of Madison WI. They had a Gehl portable mixer grinder model 120(?). During the winter months with the dairy, swine, and beef operations, we ground feed 5-6 days a week, 2 or 3 batches Monday thru Friday, and 1 batch on Saturday morning. During really, really, long, cold weather, we had to grind feed all day on Saturday, and occasionally on Sunday just keep up with the increase in consumption. ------------- I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. | i know a few yet that does the G/M thing, also hammer mills ear corn for his cows. i gots an Owatona G/M sitting here, used it for years, kept it inside, but a few years ago needed shed space more than i needed the G/M, been sitting outside since. be a good parts unit now i spose. |
