Another great behind-the-scene AC engineering. Very handy & very NECESSARY!
I imagine AC collaborated/cooperated with numerous other companies, some domestic & some foreign that required CONFIDENTIALITY and/or non-competitive & competitive alliances. No one would think anything about seeing an AC company vehicle come & go, especially unknowing about its visiting personnel passengers. Once inside the plant, visiting personnel could be escorted within contractual limitations to specific engineering offices, conference rooms, work areas during shifts, between & after shifts to facilitate tooling, etc, etc. During their stay, ALL visiting person(s) requires food, drinks, exercise, relaxation, breaks from working, overnight accommodations, etc.. While all this happens; NOTHING LEAKS about who, when, where, why, etc.
During serious LABOR STRIKES, this tunnel probably enabled executives, management, accounting, office staff, foremans, and specific line workers a SAFE/HIDDEN entry/exit to/from work, ALL OUT-of-site of the MEDIA’s news photographers, news cameras, news anchor persons, & picket lines.
Extremely COLD upper Midwest winters would be reason enough for such a tunnel to LUNCH. TORNADO warnings make a tunnel a necessity though. Probably 100s of staff could quickly drill into it for SAFETY?
Not to go un-mentioned, PROHIBITION during the early 1900s along with their speak-easies often had backrooms, tunnels, etc.??
