Costco has joined  https://www.businessinsider.com/home-depot-container-ship-over-delays-rising-shipping-costs-2021-6" rel="nofollow - Home Depot  in renting its own container ships to prevent delays and keep costs down as the  https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-global-shipping-crisis-ends-shortages-2021-6" rel="nofollow - global shipping crisis  rages on.

In a  https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fool.com%2Fearnings%2Fcall-transcripts%2F2021%2F09%2F24%2Fcostco-wholesale-cost-q4-2021-earnings-call-transc%2F" rel="nofollow - call with analysts Thursday , Costco CFO Richard Galanti said the company had chartered three ships to import products from Asia to the US and Canada. This would help Costco avoid spending  https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fool.com%2Fearnings%2Fcall-transcripts%2F2021%2F09%2F24%2Fcostco-wholesale-cost-q4-2021-earnings-call-transc%2F" rel="nofollow - six times the normal price on shipping or containers through a third party , he said.

Each ship could carry between 800 to 1,000 containers at a time, he said. The company had also leased "several thousand containers for use on these ships," he said.

Costco expected to make about 10 deliveries over the next year using these ships, accounting for around 20% of its imports from Asia, he said.

The big-box chain is among a large group of retailers grappling with an  https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-global-shipping-crisis-ends-shortages-2021-6" rel="nofollow - ongoing supply chain crisis  that's causing delays and shortages.

Falling demand in the first half of 2020, followed by a surge at the back end of the year, has led to delays, port traffic jams, and blockages. A lack of containers and dock workers has made the situation worse.

At the same time, retailers are being hit by  https://www.businessinsider.com/truckers-pay-hike-salary-truck-driver-shortage-2021-6" rel="nofollow - truck and driver shortages , leading to further delays and higher costs.

"As I discussed on last quarter's call, inflationary factors abound," Galanti said. "Higher labor costs, higher freight costs, higher transportation demand, along with container shortages and port delays ... It's a lot of fun right now."

Costco's standard rollout time for new products in its stores had doubled in some cases, he said, adding that furniture, toys, computers, video games, and appliances had the biggest delays.

So Costco also has their own ports and fleet of trucks with drivers to move products? Not seeing how owning a ship will solve the problem

So,,after years of the steamship lines thinking they were cutting a fat hog on heavy discounts and convincing themselves market share was the answer they found out you can't do it for free forever. However, they are still going to need a port To unload the ships and a bunch of trucks to deliver that stuff.

Costco has a fleet of trucks already wouldn't be hard to add some as needed just need to build their own port to get around the longshore Union that's bottling up everyone's shippment

There are other ports not nearly as busy as L.A., they can go north to Seattle or Vancouver, the containers will go directly to Costco distribution centers via rail or truck.   I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see wally world do the same thing.  It would be nice to see more stuff made in North America.

Sorry JohnCO
Seems ALL US ports with container handling equipment are bottled up.
Covid restrictions, manpower issues(as in no new applicants).

Some
Blame trucker shortages, others blame rail line cut backs, ever more blame the dock workers, COVID sickened, but it seems there is not a one answer fits all except the most prevalent Elephant in the room

Workers, applicants, those that perform the unloading, hauling, emptying of containers and stocking the stores that are in evidence of NOT THERE.

Thank Bite Me and Pissy for that.

Can hardly wait to See what happens when US farm Exports cannot leave as nobody to haul, load, or place in ships to feed the rest of the world, famine, disease, will become horrific at best.

I’ve heard that John Deere is getting into the grain loading business. It would make sense. When Carter tanked grain prices with the Russian grain embargo, he singlehandedly put a lot of farmers out of business and many more didn’t buy new machinery.

Great! (not), Was wondering when that would happen...
As for them FERD trucks sitting without computer chips, maybe the industry needs to send a plane over and get them chips loaded and fly them directly back...?  or build their own chips...Or better yet,  cut the crap out and make those vehicles less contingent on them dang computers that get a bug in their system an break down and costs the owners thousands to have replaced.
We need to go back to the KISS system.

There is not a chip shortage. We have not missed a beat during the plandemic on production of chips...now demand for chips for automobiles has increased alot...The chinese can make chips faster and cheaper than everyone else but they can not make "automotive" chips reliably, meaning zero fails over a fifteen year life cycle. That's why china wants Taiwan so bad, to get ahold of TSMC, tsmc can build reliable chips..
It takes 18 weeks to 3 months to manufacture integrated circuits that are reliable for automotive use once they are queued up for production. The specifications for automotive chips is much more stringent than consumer products, same with medical devices.

Last thing I saw on the situation was that ships from certain countries or companies were getting unloaded with no problems.  It would seem Costco and/or Walmart would not have any problem getting their ships unloaded.  If they get their boxes switched onto their ships they could get them unloaded and moved.  It also seems like the unloading companies have every thing they need for ships from specific locations!  I don't believe this is a company strike.  This is a move by the companies to cause problems with the retailers across the country.  It started with the truck industry not moving enough trucks.  Now it has moved up a level.  I'm not sure where all of these people are getting unemployment from but somebody is rigging the system or providing funds to people not to work.   It's been way too long for the working public to be able to remain unemployed with no other assistance coming in, they shouldn't even be eligible for UI any longer.  Where are they getting funds to even be able to live at their current addressed?  This is all way to confusing to be happening in our country!

all the reasons for backlog........
  • Dozens of container ships are stuck waiting off the coast of New York, per  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10029043/Dozens-ships-coast-New-York-wait-dock-countrys-second-largest-port.html" rel="nofollow - Mail Online .
  • It comes amid surging demand for goods ahead of the holiday season and a national labor shortage.
  • Port of New York and New Jersey appears to be facing similar issues as West coast ports.

That has been the advertised price here for years as well. Until about 2 months ago, now $4000 is the starting price. Last week or 2 a add wanting to buy your box starting at 4000, any amount of them. Like they are really in demand. As they say the only thing constant is change.

Wait until these ships finally get offloaded, then run home to reload with NEW containers the Chinese are now making, the sales prices will plummet.

I’ve Been in working in the Intermodal Industry driving a Truck for the same company for 24yrs and I’ve never seen it so messed up in my career. Customers canceling load because workers do not show up. Steamship lines rolling booking numbers because the Customers can get the Container they order loaded in time and it missed the train. Container yards including our has no equipment and a Big Chassis shortage. This morning already my load was canceled because of the chassis/ Container set up was used for a more important customer happens all the time. Then I was waiting on some Grain loads we transload from or Depo it fell through because of Billing but my faithful Dispatcher found me a load going to Godfrey Illinois. It’s a messed up world. Here’s a pic of the Truck I drive every day.

YEP... seen a couple articles that say there is no shortage of truck or CANS  compared to before the pandemic... The DEMAND is 30% greater.. Too much BUYING.. 30% MORE CANS to get unloaded.. Some trucks are waiting for a load... Most are on the road running.. They need MORE TRUCKS and DRIVERS, but it is NOT a shortage compared to a year ago... its MORE DEMAND. ................. thats what you get for $6 TRILLION.

TODAY---------
President Joe Biden announced a new plan to begin  https://www.newsweek.com/biden-administration-brokers-l-port-deal-amid-supply-chain-disruption-1638594" rel="nofollow - 24-hour operations at the Port of Los Angeles  to ease the bottleneck of cargo ships amid the growing supply chain crisis.

"Today we have some good news. We're going to help speed up the delivery of goods, all across America," Biden said.

The Port of L.A. will increase its operation hours by 60 hours a week by staying open at night and over the weekend.

Ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach, California account for 40 percent of all shipping containers entering the United States.

-------------------------

Full year growth figures for the volume of containers shipped around the world are showing considerable divergence among analysts.

Alphaliner is predicting 5.8% year-on-year growth. Overall, the top 20 container ports handled 13% more twenty-foot boxes in the first six months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, new analysis from Alphaliner shows.

The most startling figures from Alphaliner’s port data on the first six months come from the United States where Los Angeles/Long Beach and New York/New Jersey recorded year-on-year throughput growth of 41% and 31% respectively.

Part of the news today also included getting more drivers in the trucks, I just wonder with all the rules and regulations and requirements to get a license now where are these drivers suppose to come from? And another thing is California regulations on what trucks can haul off the docks and in state.

Posted By: Ron Eggen

Plus the dock rules that all trucks must be 2011 or newer, no owner operators , and there is some new type of tax drivers are avoiding .

West Coast emissions rules are slowing everything down, freight into CA as well as supplies of goods NOT produced there so the inevitable begins to fall apart.
