You can still buy them new from Agco, but hold on to your hat. I checked in to getting one to put in a WD and it was nearly $100. Needless to say I didn’t order one. I’ve heard that one of those hardware store number springs has one that’s supposed to be comparable to a 175.

A legit 170/175 governor spring is the same as a WD/WD45 and are lesser/weaker than a legit D-17 spring. Check out the p/n's for yourself on the AGCO website.
70226785 for the 170 and WD. 70229519 for a D-17 tractor.
EDIT: WC- 70222822 (1500 RPM) WC faster-70223498 (1600 RPM) WD/WD-45- 70220702 (1700 RPM) 170/175- 70226785 (1800 RPM) D-17 70229519 (2000+ RPM) this is approximate top speed when these springs are used with the 70229980 governor weight !!!!! A 170 and 175 use a different and LIGHTER governor weight with the 70226785 spring which then yields 2,000 RPM. This needs to be logged in the Information area.

Thanks guys for the part numbers and information. I will check that out too. I guess my real question is: Is it worth (or any advantage) changing the governor spring on a engine that I believe came from a combine. To basically get a little more RPM? It runs good. Has plenty of power on the dirt tracks pulling in low. Just seems to lack RPM. I say seems because I have not actually checked and compared the RPM to specs. (just dont have the tools at this time). One track checked RPM and it was not over spec but dont know what the numbers were either. Still having fun playing with it in the dirt! (I know this should be in the pulling section, sorry) Regards, Chris

The Gleaner model "E" governor spring doesn't have a plunger inside of it. So, you'll have difficulty getting it to idle down fully. As far as RPM's, it will probably be similar to the 1800 to 1900 RPM top speed, but I doubt will ever match the 2000+ of a D-17. Stick it in !!! Then you tell us what it does !!!

Dr, I will try to find one of the D17 springs and try it. I put one in Grandsons WD and it seems to have a little more RPM. I also put one in the WD45 and it seemed to have a little more RPM also. Resulting in three second place ribbons each, for the WD, WD45 and the D17. The WZ did not place:( Regards, Chris
