do you say that the "customer" IS NOT always right ?? I've been tasked with a "recessed" medicine cabinet install that requires 3&a half inches of wall space X 40 inches width of the cabinet in a 2x4 studded wall. I've tried drilling the ramifications to the GC that this is NOT realistic "structurally wise " to no avail, the "homeowner" gets what they want
  !! This is a "remodel" project that has the 18"x4' plaster board with a TRUE 3/4"of "concrete" on top of that  |

Is this part of a larger remodel project? If not, I would tell the customer to find another installer if he/she insists on having this done. Otherwise have a good attorney draw up a document releasing you and your company from any liability and although you could still be sued this might change their mind. That install would involve a major rebuild of the wall. ------------- Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God. |

Exterior wall? Load bearing wall? Why not open it up some and add a header as you would a window? But to answer your question, yes there is time they are not right. Your job then is to explain why, using building code documentation to support your decision. If they can't accept that, which some won't then walk away. |

| Lady insisted we remove most of the walls in her flat roofed house to "open it up" she saw it on DIY and she just knew it could be done! We finally took out the wall between the Dining Room & Living Room but she did not like the header we made with 4- 2x12's. told her husband what would happen if we got a lot of snow and ice, and he understood...Harvey |

All can do is let them know the limits of the conditions, when they insist, pack your tools and go home tell them to find someone else. The money is NOT worth the issues. Did that with a number of auto clients that INSISTED I could modify their machines without breaking the law, explained to them THEY could change equipment I could NOT as they were the owner and I a EPA LIMITED mechanic. Refused to perform the work where one went to court, attorney stated in the courtroom we just refused to do repairs, when I was on the Stand was asked what was asked for by our attorney, explained cannot remove or convert US EPA Devices for payment as was Illegal, case dismissed as their attorney backed out. Know of two carpenters that have declined jobs as Unsafe or Unsuitable for their quality of work. Property owners did not find anyone to do that work and gave up on it.
