I have been wondering how big of a batwing mower would my 200 be able to run I would mainly be using this to shred corn stalks and in some pasture grass with it for some custom work. My 200 is a 1972 and I only have the 540 PTO option on it. the tractor did not come with the 540 and 1,000 PTO option on it. What size do you guys think would be a good fit for me. thank you for your time

In my world a 15 ft,er works great - you can get alot of dependable horsepower out of that 200 for running it at full speed

I pull a 20' woods with my JD4020 with no trouble in weeds.

What do you want to cut? Our 10’ woods pulls hard on corn stalks and a nice combo with the 200 but too slow on grass. 15’ is real nice on medium/ heavy growth grass, 20’ works well in the pasture after the cows eat some off. 20’ pulls to hard on cornstalks unless you go fast across field. General use, I’d go no bigger than 15’ with 540.

Depends on how low you go. Most of our fields have too many rocks even after being picked so running really low is not an option. When I do run low the power needed goes up........ but I'm not using a batwing. I've only used the flail type for stalk chopping. I see batwing mowers that cover most of a ditch and the tractors look to be 100 hp size or smaller.

IMO, look for a 15', the airplane no flat tires are a plus ( $300 each ) make sure it has stump jumpers " the round metal discs on the blade mounts" there's a reason why the State Road Departments won't buy without them. Also any larger and will surely be 1000 rpm.

Older Alamo / units with 3 gear boxes had gear box issues in heavy use. Newer units with 4 gear boxes seemed to holdup better, the front box splits drives 1 shaft to each drop box, but also then has 1 set blades that is lefthand cut & 2 RH cut. Keep the blades sharp, it'll make a gear difference in travel speed.

I've seen Ford 5000 gas and JD 2020 diesels, CIH 885, pull 15' batwings not fast but get job done. The 885 could travel fast enough that it would leave hi n lo streaks in the grass, amount of material you're cutting determines travel spd. Some want to say that 1000 rpm units turn blades faster than 540 rpm, they ussually don't, check Op Man'l if you doubt.

In addition to what you're cutting,how fast,etc the terrain of the land is important too light of a tractor will get you killed on hilly/mountain land.

Dad pulled a 15’ rhino for years with a D17 IV clipping pasture. It had no trouble at all. Now if you get down by the creek around the bean field that’s a different story. The 6080 doesn’t like it.
