So I put the 172 mower on my "not restored" WD today (after adjusting the draw bar), and boy you can tell the difference, as the restored tractor has M&W pistons on it and will play great with the mower in heavy weeds. But it still did a good job.  Anyway, I thought I would try to remove the blades to measure and find replacements as these look bad, but I could not get the castle nuts to budge. Any tips?   I have thought of flap disc putting a new edge on these in place, but man they seem really badly worn.  Also, side bar, when I adjusted my draw bar to attach the mower (I had in my head you want the draw bar all the way back to use the mower), this front bolt is literally seized in the bar... Guess I need to use a sledge to knock her free?  |

Most castle nuts have a key through the castle to keep it from turning. It almost looks like you can see the key in your picture. They didn't by chance weld the bolt to the drawbar did they?

| Generally there is a hole in the deck that lines up with the nut so you can put a socket through the top side. A 1in truck tire gun is perfect for that. You will be retirement age buy the time you sharpen with a flap disc. You need a BIG angle grinder but a baby will do. They aren't wore that bad except the rounded end. You'll need to take a good 1/8 in off the edge to get sharp again. |

The one thing that AC didn't do right on these mowers is to have a hole to put the wrench through... You could take a hole saw to it, but check to see if you're drilling through any structural steel, sometimes there's something in the way... ------------- Source: Babylon Bee. DiyDave -- Heat seems like a good plan. ac160 -- I don't think it's welded but I'll take a wire wheel to it to check. Leon n/c AR -- I swear I removed the pin, but I'll make sure there isn't more left in there. It was rusted as heck. SteveM C/IL -- Noted, I will go out and buy a grinding disc so I can put an edge back on it. Kind of interesting these mowers don't have an access hole in them. |
