| My WD45 was running just fine then started missing & cutting out. A retired mechanic checked it out & said he thinks it's the carb. Probably has dirt or crud in it. I have the carb off and in a bucket. What's the best way to proceed? Soak it in carburetor cleaner then blow it out with an air compressor? Please & thanks for advice. Dan. |

Dan, I'm a novice when it comes to these carbs, but I know NOT to blow air through them as you might collapse the float. There are a lot of threads on here about cleaning etc. these carbs. You just need to do a search. I just did a seach and came up with these. This is just one page of 10. These are very simple carbs. Like a giant lawnmower carb, really. I don't think you will have any trouble taking it apart, slicking stuff up and putting back together. Only thing you need to watch is getting the venturi tube the right way up. You may also want to pop off the distributor cap and see how much play the rotor has. I had similar problems twice. For one the distributor was shot and I bought a beautifully reconditioned one from Steve in NJ. ( https://www.bb-customcircuits.com/" rel="nofollow - https://www.bb-customcircuits.com/ ) For the other I just had to torque the nut that holds the spiral cut gear that drives the distributor. If that gear can move on the shaft, it changes the timing and can cause all sort of weird coughing and spitting.

Dick L, a while back, said that he "boils' carburetors. I tried Dick's method. First, I take the bowl off the carb and take the float out. I clean up any obvious crud. I have an old hot plate from when we redid our kitchen a few years back and a pan I rescued from a garage sale. Everything but the float goes into a pot of water and bring it to a rolling boil, then shut it off. As soon as it is cool enough that I can handle it (with pliers or gloves), I take it apart. The seats and screws seem to come out much easier, when they are still warm and it really cleans the carb up pretty well. I have used this method several times and it works for me.
