We spent some time in Arkansas over the weekend. Brother lives at Bella Vista. We rented a house for the weekend. When we got there the AC was turned up. I turned it down and it just took a few minutes to cool the house down. It would have taken this one over an hour to cool our house down. Ours had quit the day before we left for brothers. Our AC man stopped out 1st thing yesterday. He said ours was way over charged. So they set the coolant level correctly. It didn't make any difference in the house. He looked, this one was made in 1989, was new when it was put in. Anyway $3400.00 will put us in a far more efficient unit. That includes the A coil, all new tubing, and installing a new plennium on the furnace. Its a name brand USA made unit. He could get a no name unit made overseas for a thousand less next week.

Biggest factor in AC efficiency is Size of coils and type refrigerant which is fast becoming a moot point as the EPA is considering a ban of ALL Forms of Refrigerants. Would like to see those people languishing in their Fed Offices without a Chiller System to keep them cool to make these judgements.

Does anyone have a suggestion for adding whole house AC to a house without ducts; we have a hot water system for heat? The house has 6 in. insulated walls and we built it back in the 70's. Use 3 window units now but I get tired of lugging those things in and out of the windows every summer and fall. Not as easy as it was 20 yrs ago.

cooling is easy, it's DISTRIBUTION that is 'fun'.

Even though I have central air, I STILL have 2 window units in the upstairs bedrooms.

seems cold air falls.....hot air rises....Depending on attic access and layout, might get unit up there with main duct, to upstairs rooms and one over the stairwell ??

Check out the "Mini Splits" by Mitsubishi. They work great.

My prior house was like yours. Great efficient heat, but no ducts for a/c. I was always considering what to do besides move away! Haha....anyway, new house, the upstairs is vaulted style ceiling. The a/c is routed to several small circular vents flush with the ceiling. They look good and work good. That might be the way to go if possible, depending on your attic space.

Hunter, another option is a mini split with the OUTSIDE unit that can feed TWO different inside units... You can run the freon piping up the outside wall and bore a hole thru the wall into the room and mount the INSIDE Unit up toward the ceiling of that room... One upstairs, one downstairs........ or one living room, one bed room, etc..

This guy is doing "new construction"... but look at the 13:00 mark to see his OUTSIDE Unit.. and install tubeing THRU THE WALL not inside the wall.
