I made a post a few days ago about my A/C model B serial numbers and casting numbers. (Thanks to all who answered my question!) But now I have a different question I was hoping somebody can answer for me. On the side of my engine block, next to the casting number is D28X, does anybody know what this means? Is it the date it was casted? I am stumped here and would like some clarification. Thanks!  |

Kaleb, in the last 20 years i dont ever remember that question coming up. We have discussed the casting AM numbers and the "cast date" , but no one has ever asked about D28X. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

YES... every motor has a similar number. I have no idea what it means. I have 5 tractors that are easy to get to so i read the number AM 2916 27 E170 AM 2916 13 M16Z AM 2916 27 F600 AM 2916 20 CL AM 2916 17 A16Y one odd thing is the "27" motors have the cast number upside down and under the freeeze plug, not above the plug.. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Hm thats interesting, could they be put there from the dealership? If they are I'm not sure why a dealership would put that there or if they are allowed to.

| A dealership couldn't put casting numbers on things. A number gets cast on a part when it is poured at the foundry. A number or marking found on a casting, would have been incorporated with the pattern that was used in the foundry when the mold was formed. |

Not experimental... they ALL have it... it was CAST into the motor block from the factory.. Normally numbers are part number , date, manufacturing site, lot number, run number, design change ... hard to say what these numbers mean.
Could even be the number of the guy that setup the mold for the casting. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

It looks like its stamped onto the block, not molded. But good point.

I was thinking about lot number, I suppose it would make it easier finding the tractor that a person ordered. And it would also make sense of it being the guys number because it's different every tractor.

OK, here's my 2 cents worth. It's for foundry use only and a means of ID.Had no use to AC. It could be a date code or the ID of the pattern that the mold was made from. My money is on a pattern ID that the molds were made from.

"It looks like it is stamped onto the block, not molded." Your picture clearly shows it is raised, if it was stamped it would be sunk into the metal, as the serial number is. It was cast as part of the block. There would have been a small tag, with that on it, attached to the pattern which was packed in sand to make the mold for the block.

the numbers and letters are CAST into the block as it was poured, just like the AM2916 number ...... if it was STAMPED it would look like the tractor serial number by the shift. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Sorry if its not the answer you want, but its not hard to explain. That is not a small plate punched into the after block was cast (for the record its cast, not casted). Again that came from a tag that was attached (a small nail head impression is visible at each end of the tag) to the pattern used to make the mold that the block was cast in. I worked at a foundry for a time. The pattern makers put tags like that on them to identify different things as specified for an order. It might be pattern number, date, lot, hard to say what that one is.

Here are 4 different tractors with 3 different locations and three different size numbers... and one only has letters, no numbers.. All Model B tractors. The AM2916 - xx casting number is always the same... This "number" is random size, random, location, upside down, etc....Probably not real important.     ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

the M16Z and A16Y are obviously TAGS that were set into the mold before the casting.. A couple of the others appear to be etched into the mold as there is no tag indentation. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

 Keeps life interesting to have mystery's to solve.  From the few tid bits I know about case made parts, I know bigger casting need to cure. I was told engine blocks need 6 to 9 months to cure. Something about heating and cooling cycles of ambient air moves things a bit at first. Or was somebody pulling my leg and filling with BS? Since I don't think they where, I got another. Hopefully Jim that or others that worked around casting can answer.Do they let small parts cure for months as well? My brain is giving me more, engine builder down the road told me about block curing. A bigger foundry like car companies need date code as they have acres of outside storage for curing engine blocks. By looking at date no question as to if the bloke has had time to cure or not before going in for machining.
