I have a D17 and was having trouble starting it. The battery was fully charged and sometimes it would start right up and other times it would just make a loud click like the starter was no engaging. I thought it was the switch and replaced it with new switch. The switch had 5 prongs and 2 wired connected to the 2 prongs/male terminals marked battery and 2 connected to the 2 prongs marked ignition. prong marked ST did not have any wire connected. Not sure what that is for. after replacing the switch I have the same issues. Sometimes it starts right up and other times it sounds like the starter is trying to engage but immediately stops turning over. The engine does not even turn over once when this happens. It has a push button that gets pushed after the switch is turned on. I am wondering if the push button switch should be replaced or if I should have a wire hooked up to the ST prong on the ignition switch. Other issues I need to address? It runs great when started up and same thing happens when I try to start it whether it is hot or cold.

If it has a push button , no need for wire on ST. Sounds like push button is bed or loose wire, or solenoid. MACK.

I would get your starter checked out. Could be getting weak.
Sounds like you have started replacing stuff for no reason.

thanks, I will have to check out my starter and I will probably replace the push button switch also.

since you hear it CLICK, it probably is not the switch or button... I would CLEAN the battery terminals, ground clamp, starter ground face, connector at the starter..

Try checking the push switch with a test light, remove wire going from switch to solenoid. IF light comes on everytime you push button reattach wire & go to the solenoid. IF light doesn't always light replace push switch or move wire to "S" terminal on keyswitch. Remove cable going to starter at solenoid, attach test light to solenoid terminal push button multiple times, IF light comes on everytime problem is likely in starter or how its grounding. You've a long weekend to look it over. Good luck hunting for problem.

Sounds to me as if the starter is on it's way south.... Take it off and then take a look at the brushes first. If they are looking good, then take the whole thing to an auto parts store and have them check it out. If it were wiring it SHOULD do it all the time. If the push button, it's possible.
When it doesn't turn over, do you push the button numerous times and it still won't start? Then it's the starter...

When it won't start jump the tractor from the battery directly to the starter with jumper cables, if it won't start then probably is the starter. If it starts every time then it probably is in the wiring between the battery and the starter, you can jump across each switch to check them. Be sure that all of the electrical connections are clean, don't forget the ground cable for the battery.

I tried it again over the weekend and my brother-in-law was helping and he noticed that the times it is not starting there is sparking at the solenoid. Where the cable from the positive battery terminal connect to the solenoid it appears to sometimes spark and short out against the bracket the solenoid connects to. I am going to try to replace the solenoid but am having trouble finding exactly which one to use. Some of the post say different ones. I have the 4 post solenoid and some people who used the Agco part had issues. Some say to use a mid-seventies Ford or Chevy solenoid. Any thoughts?
