Just bought a 185 with a 400 loader. I am trying to find the serial number to see what year it is. There is a number stamped on the right side of the bell housing 36590. There is also a number written on the back under the seat 79475 that looks like someone at the factory wrote on for shipping.
Also, what kind of hydraulic oil does it take? I added ATF when I got it and now I changed the hydraulic oil and it came out tan which could be water from sitting around or a mix of the ATF and brown brake hyd oil they used later for both hydraulic, trans and differential in the later tractors.

TIA

Wow interesting oil descreptions and colors- best bet is to put if off to the side and pull all the hydraulic plugs - drain it - flush it - refill with 303 Pure Flo- or now PUR Flow 334 oil and good to go

I put the wrong hydraulic fluid in. Instead of ATF I should have put in power fluid which is wet brake fluid equivalent to 821 power fluid.

Guess it's drain time again.

More likely a 500 loader, not a 400 series.

DO NOT USE 303 !!!

Almost all universal hydraulic fluids have something on the side of the pail saying what manufacturers specs it meets. Make sure the hydraulic fluid you buy meets Allis Chalmers 821 Power Fluid specs.

Again, DO NOT USE 303 !!!

Re check your serial number, I think the last number is about 15960?  I have 15903 and I think it is about 59 from the last one, those numbers are hard to read.

The Pure Flo 303 has always been a good grade oil, they changed the number to 334 now , the 303 you want to stay away from is the straight generic 303 Tractor Supply and other farm stores sell - its thin as water and freezes in winter- thats the bad stuff
