Checking the fluids in my D 17.  Hydraulic is slightly low, service manual recommends SAE 20 oil, non detergent.  I can't find it locally.  Is there a viable substitute?

Thank you, can that be added to the present oil or should the old oil be drained and replaced. Appreciate your advice.

If it was mine, it would get changed....every compartment.

Change it now and dont worry about it for another 10 years. UTF can be purchased at any Farm Store, Napa, Wal Mart, etc..

as Dr said... transmission, hydraulics, bevel gear... can all use the same.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

He may have trouble locating the 'Bevel Gear' in his D-17.

Perhaps you could give him some further advice.

Power steering ahead of the radiator. Takes about 5 quarts. Fill just above the steering gear. Overfilling will vomit out the excess. Drain plug on the right rear corner underneath. Takes 1 1/8" wrench.  Hydraulics takes about 2 1/2 gallons. Drain plug on the bottom of the sump pointing straight down. Same wrench. Power Director also takes about 2 1/2 gallons. Drain plug straight down from the clutch pedal. Same wrench. Transmission/differential takes approx 6 gallons. Drain plug directly under the seat. Swing the drawbar to the side. Same wrench.
